Why does a large education nation like China have so few
world renowned scientists as the US? Educationists from China
and the US try to find out the answer to questions like this at a
forum on the basic education strategy.
The forum, held recently, was jointly organized by the
Education Development Research Center of the Ministry of
Education in China and the Postgraduate School of the University
of Pennsylvania in the US. It aims to find out similarities and
differences that exist between two countries in their educational
system.
While some educationists in China keep a doubtful eye to
the country's educational system in recent years, their American
counterparts give a positive answer to the basic education in
China, saying that it is still one of the best in the world.
An American educationist told reporters that basic education
in the US was criticized in recent years due to its political
tendency. On the contrary, Chinese government's stress on basic
education and qualified teachers has set a good example. At
primary and middle school, pupils in China did better in math
and science lessons than the US pupils. However, few grow to be
world "masters". Why? Educationists attributed this to China's
stress on examination rather than students' interest.
Deputy Director of the postgraduate school of Pennsylvania
University said American teachers encourage students to focus
on their strong points. In China, students are driven to study to
pass the entrance examination test and they do not pay much
attention to their own interest.
At the forum, director of the Education Development
Research Center said in the future, the research center
would make its middle and long-term basic education strategy
by taking some references from other countries including the US.
He also revealed that for a long time in the future, China would
make a breakthrough in setting the policy for quality education.

When a tornado hit a small town nearby, many families were
left homeless. After- ward, all the local newspapers carried stories
of the families who suffered the day, a picture
touched me. A young woman stood in front of a mobile home.
A young boy, seven or eight, stood at her side, eyes downcast.
Clutching at her skirt was a little girl who stared into the camera
with confusion and fear. The article below gave clothing sizes
closely matched ours. This would be a good opportunity to teach
my children to help those less fortunate than themselves.
I took the picture home, explaining their situation to my
seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and to three-year-old
Meghan. "We have so much, and these poor people now have
nothing," I said. "We'll share what we have with them. " I bought
three large boxes and placed them in the living room. Meghan
watched as the boys and I filled one of the boxes with canned
goods, food, soap, and other things. While I sorted through our
clothes, I encouraged the boys to go through their toys and
donate some of their less favorite things. Meghan watched
quietly as the boys piled up discarded toys and games."I'll help
you find something for the little girl," I said. The boys placed the
toys they had chosen into one of the boxes while I filled the third
box with clothes. Meghan walked up with Lucy, her much-loved
doll, and hugged her tightly to her chest. She paused in front of
the box that held the toys. "Oh, honey," I said. "you don't have to
give Lucy. You love her so much. " Meghan nodded, eyes
glistening with held-back tears. "Lucy makes me happy, Mommy.
Maybe she'll make that little girl happy, too. " Swallowing hard, I
stared at Meghan for a long time, wondering how I could teach
the boys the lesson she had just taught me. I suddenly realized
generosity was giving what you cherished most.
I, who had wanted to teach, had been taught. The boys were
open-mouthed, as their sister placed her favorite doll in the box.
Without a word, Brad went to his room and came back with one
of his favorite action figures. A slow smile spread across Brett's
, I realized the boys had also recognized what
Meghan's gesture
meant. Holding back tears, I pulled three of them into my
arms. I removed my old jacket from the box and replaced it with
the new one that I had found on sale last week. I hoped the
young woman in the picture would love it as much as I did. 46.
Which word can be used to describe the toys and games that the
boys first put
into the boxes?
A. Unwanted
B. Second-handed
C. Valueless
D. Broken
47. Why were there held-back tears in Meghan's eyes?
A. She was going to say good-bye to her favorite doll.
B. She saw the poor children in the picture.
C. Her mother asked her to do something she didn't like.
D. She was forced to donate her Lucy.
48. In the last paragraph, the little boy Brett smiled
because______.
A. he was proud of his sister
