子曰:「学而时习之，不亦说乎。有朋自远方来，不亦乐乎。人不知而不愠，不

亦君子乎。」

Confucius said: "lsn’tit a pleasure to study and practice what you

havelearned? lsn’'t it also great when friends visit from distant places?

lfpeople do not recognize me and it doesn’t bother me, am l not a

SuperiorMan?"

子曰:「不患人之不己知，患不知人也。」

Confucius said: "l am not bothered by the fact that l am unknown. l

ambothered when l do not know others."

子曰:「道之以政，齐之以刑，民免而无耻;道之以德，齐之以礼，有耻且格。

JConfucius said: "lf you govern the people legalistically and control

themby punishment, they will avoid crime,but have no personal sense of

you govern them by means of virtue and control them with

propriety,they will gain their own sense of shame,and thus correct

themselves."

子曰:「吾十有五而志于学，三十而立，四十而不惑，五十而知天命，六十而耳

顺，七十而心所欲，不逾矩。」

Confucius said: "At fifteen my heart was set on learning; at thirty l

stoodfirm; at forty l had no more doubts; at fifty l knew the mandate of

heaven;at sixty my ear was obedient; at seventy l could follow my heart's

desirewithout transgressing the norm."

子曰:「温故而知新，可以为师矣。」

Confucius said: "Reviewing what you have learned and learning

anew,youare fit to be a teacher."

子曰:「君子不器。」

Confucius said: "The Superior Man is no utensil."

子贡问君子。子曰:「先行其言而后从之。」

Tzu Kung asked about the character of the Superior Man. Confucius

said,"First he practices what he preaches and then he follows it."

子曰:「学而不思则罔，思而不学则殆。」

Confucius said: "To study and not think is a waste. To think and not study

is dengerous.”
