直译与意译

1. But I hated Sakamoto, and I had a feeling he’d surely lead us both to our

ancestors. 直译：但是我恨坂本，并预感到他肯定会领着咱们去见咱们的老祖宗。

意译：但是我恨坂本，并预感到他肯定会领着咱们去送死。

2. I gave my youth to the sea and I came home and gave my wife my old age.

直译：我把青春献给了海洋，等我回家，献给妻子的便只有迟暮之年了。

意译：我把青春献给了海洋，等我回到家里见到妻子的时候，已经是白发苍苍了。

3. Their accent couldn’t fool a native speaker.

直译：他们的口音不能愚弄本地人。

意译：本地人是不会听不出他们是外乡人的。

意译：本地人一听他们的口音便知道他人是外乡人。

4. John is tall like I am the Queen of Sheba.

直译：约翰高得像我是西巴皇后。

意译：约翰高的话，我就是西巴皇后。

意译：要说约翰个头高，没那回事。

直译是基础，意译是补充

我国著名的翻译家陆殿扬先生曾提出如下的原则：“Translate literally, if possible,

or appeal to free translation.”（能直译就尽量直译，不能直译就采取意译。）

直译：每个人的生活都有玫瑰和荆棘。

意译：每个人的生活都有甜和苦。

6. I had butterflies in my stomach for an hour so before I was due to make my

speech. 直译：在轮到我演讲之前，有一个小时左右我肚子里好像有蝴蝶似的。

意译：在轮到我演讲之前，有一个小时左右我心里都是怪紧张的。

句中“have butterfly in one’s stomach”是个习语，意为“因害怕而感到紧张”。

7. He was taught by his father to be liberal of his help.

直译：他被父亲教导说要慷慨帮助人。

意译：他的父亲教导他要乐于助人。

8. His spoken English isn’t good enough for lack of exposure.

直译：他的英语口语不够好，因为缺少暴露。

意译：他的英语口语不够好，因为缺少英语环境。

9. It’s a temptation for me to answer him in that way.

直译：想那样回答他对于我是一种诱惑。

意译：我情不自禁地那样回答他。

10. What is learned in the cradle is carried to the grave.

直译：一个人的摇篮里学到的知识可以带到坟墓里去。

意译：幼年学到的知识至死不忘。

11. The pen is mightier than the sword.

直译：笔比剑强。

意译：文治胜过武功。

武功[专指在军事方面取得的成就；战功] 文治武功

12. He bent solely upon profit.

译文A：他只屈身于利润之前。

译文B：只有利润才使他低头。

译文C：他唯利是图。

13. Didn’t she swear she’d never again believe anything in trousers? 译文A：

她不是发誓从此以后再也不相信裤子吗？

译文B：她不是发誓从此以后再也不相信穿裤子的家伙吗？

译文C：她不是发誓从此以后再也不相信男人吗？

14. He is between two fires.

误译：他在两边的火力之间。

正译：他受到两面夹攻。

15. Without tools man is nothing, with tools he is all.

误译：没有工具，人什么也不是；有了工具，人就是一切。

正译：没有工具，人则无能为力；有了工具，人能大显神通。
