Every school day, we use schoolbags to carry all of our things to school. They are big parts of our
lives. But have you ever thought about the _______ of the schoolbag?
In Han Dynasty(
汉朝
), students used bamboo boxes to carry books to school. People thought that
the bamboo box was the _______ schoolbag. There were usually two or three layers(
层
) in the box.
Kids put different things, like books, brushes, ink stones(
砚
) and _______ in the boxes. You can see
the bamboo box in many TV shows. _______ , in the Legend of White Snake(
白蛇传
), Xu Shilin
carries a bamboo box to the capital to take an exam.
Hundreds of years later, people _______ a new kind of schoolbag called “budai”, or “hip-pocket”.
The budai was lighter than the bamboo box. With the founding(
建立
) of China, military
rucksacks(
军用帆布包
) became popular. Ask your grandparents or parents about these bags. Maybe
they can tell you about their _______ of carrying them when they were at school.

14. In Ireland, scientists studied a group of 42 cats. They gave them three tasks. One was to give
them some delicious food out of a plate. They found that the male cats preferred to use their left paw,
and the female cats preferred to use their right paw.
Being left-handed or right-handed can also include eyes, ears, claws and even tails. In Italy,
scientists discovered that dogs wag their tails to the right when they see something that they like.
When they see something that they don’t like, their tails go to the left.
There are lots of fun examples. Left-handed dolphins swim in a different direction around the pool.
Elephants like to swing their trunks(
象鼻
) in one direction. Even snakes prefer to curl up(
蜷缩起来
)
only one way.
Many people believe that polar bears are left-handed. They say that polar bears cover their black
nose with their right paw, which helps them hide in the snow when they are hunting. Then they can
sneak up(
慢慢靠近
) on an animal, and their left paw will be free to catch it.
Scientists, however, disagree. Some have watched polar bears for thousands of hours. They never
saw the bears cover their nose during a hunt. They also saw no evidence(
证据
) that they were left-
handed. Without taking any notice of this, many websites continue to say that polar bears are left-
handed.

15.
A few years ago in August, there were many people in the countryside near London. Some people
were there at 4:30 in the morning. They were there to help James May to build a house. But it was
not a common house. It was a Lego house. 1,200 people used 3.3 million Lego toy bricks to make a
real house.
It was a part of a TV show called Toy Stories. In this programme, James used traditional toys to
make “real” things. Why Lego? Well, because when James was young, he loved Lego and played
with it all the time.
The people finished building the house on September 17th, almost seven weeks after they started.
Everything was Lego. All the ways, doors and windows were Lego. There was a Lego bedroom and
a Lego bed. There was a Lego bathroom with a Lego toilet and a shower. And they all worked! In
