finally、lastly、ultimately、eventually、in the end

一. finally:

ad.

1. 最后,终于

They finally realized that the whole thing was a joke.

他们终于意识到整个事情是场玩笑。

2. 决定性地

It's not finally settled yet.

这还没有彻底解决。

1. 表示先后顺序的“最后”、“终于”，通常放在句首。如：The carwouldn’t start, so finally we decided

to go on foot. 汽车不能发动，所以我们最后决定走路去。此用法尤其用于在列举时引出最后一项。如：He lived in Turkey, France, Norway and finally Mexico. 他曾在土耳其、法国、挪威等国住过，最后还在墨西哥住过.

2. 表示等了好久才“终于”，此时通常放在谓语动词之前 (若有助动词放在助词后)。如：After several

long delays, the plane finallyleft at 6 o’clock. 在几次长时间的耽误之后，飞机终于在6点钟起飞。When he finally arrived he explained he had lost hisway. 他最后赶到时，他解释说他迷路了。

3. 表示决定性的或不再更改的“最后”。如：

It is not finallysettled yet. 这事还未最后解决。

4. 区别 finally, at last, in the end。如：

(1) 三者都可表示经过许多变化、一段等候或一番拖延或曲折之后的“最后”，但有细微区别：finally

语气较轻，且平铺直叙，一般不带感情色彩，有时可与 in the end换用；而 at last换用；而则语气稍重，且往往带有一定的感情色彩 (如不耐烦、放心、如愿等)。如：

Finally [in theend] he succeeded. 最后他成功了 (不带感情色彩----平铺直叙)。He succeeded at

last. 他终于成功了 (带有感情色彩---- 欣慰或如愿等)。

(2) in the end 可用来谈论将来的事，而其它两者一般不这样用。如：In the end things will mend. (谚语)船到桥头自然直。

I’m sureeverything will turn out all right in the end. 我相信最后一切都会好起来的。

二. ultimately:

“最后”、“极点”、“终于”，即达到最高界线 ,Ultimately people rely on science to gain an

ujderstanding of biological phenomena. 最终人们依靠科学来理解生物现象。 除此之外，它还有“根本”，“基本上”的意思。

三. lastly:

不常见，而且用在句端。 指连续顺序的最后，通常用在列举事情的场合。
