The elk, or wapiti, is a species of deer native to North
America, Europe, and Asia. It is the largest species of deer
in the world, standing up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) tall at the
shoulder. Male elk are known for their large 'antlers,' which
are branched horns made of bone and shed each year. The elk can
weigh up to 300 kilograms (660 pounds) and has a brown to dark
gold fur. Elks live in herds in open woodlands and meadows and
prefer areas with plenty of water and vegetation.。
