没有比较级和最高级的形容词/副词

有些形容词(副词)一般不用来比较,本身具有无法比较的含义。例

如：

1.表示 “完全、特别”等意义的形容词（副词）

表示 “完全、特别”等意义的形容词／副词包括：omnipresent

无所不在的，final最后的, fatal致命的，hopeless无望的, fatherless

无父的，motherless无母的，almighty全能的，universal普遍的，

absolute(ly)绝对的（地）, complete(ly)完全的（地）, entire(ly)全面

的（地）, excellent(ly)极佳的（地）, perfect(ly)完美的（地）,

thorough(ly)完全的（地）, total (ly) 完全的（地）, unprecedented

(ly)无前例的（地），full满的, empty空的, relative相对的，etc.

Jim is a most faultless man.（误）

Jim is a faultless man.（正）

2.表示“极限、主次”等的形容词（副词）

表示“极限、主次”等的形容词／副词包括：chief(ly),

extreme(ly), inferior(ly), infinite, junior, main, matchless,

maximum, minimum, minor, senior，subordinate(ly)，

superior(ly), utmost, wonderful, principal, supreme,etc.

3.表示“几何形状”等的形容词

表示“几何形状”等的形容词有angular, circular, level, oblong,

oval, round, square, top, bottom, horizontal, triangular, rhomboid,

straight, hollow.等。

4.表示“处所、方位、时间”的形容词（副词）

表示“处所、方位、时间”的形容词／副词有ahead, back, daily,

east, front, left, here, north, now, present, right, south, then, there,

middle, forward, backward, outside, bygone, future, once,

previous, weekly, daily, idle等。

5.表示“状态”的形容词

表示“状态”的形容词有agape, afraid, float, aghast, alight,

alike, alive, ashamed, ashore, asleep, averse, awake, aware, blind,

deaf, dumb, dead, naked等。

6.表示“性质、材料、国籍”等的形容词

表示“性质、材料、国籍”等的形容词有American, atomic,

economic, earthen, fascist, golden, Marxist, scientific, sonic,

wooden, woolen, silken, metallic, industrial, economic, spiritual

等。

7.表示“独一无二”的形容词

表示“独一无二”的形容词有mere, only, single, sheer, sole,

unparalleled, matchless, unique等。

8.表示强调的形容词 / 副词

表示强调的形容词 / 副词有barely, favourite, hardly, own,

scarcely, simply, very等。

如果不强调某些这类形容词的严密性，只表示接近某种状态，或

用转义和比喻义时，亦可有比较级和最高级，但应慎用。例如：

The essay is more perfect than that one. (nearer to perfection)

Her cup is fuller than yours.(nearer to the fullest)

Note:

英语中有些名词可以表示最高级意义，如：acme顶点（极点），

extremity尽头（末端），forefront最前面，height最高点（顶

点），，minimum最小量，maximum最大量，top最高点（最高

度），summit顶点，supremacy最高权力（最高地位），zero最低

点等。例如：

No one questions his supremacy as an expert in this field.

She has reached the acme of her career.

He always stands in the forefront in time of danger.
