《活着》英文读后感
After reading "To Live", I was deeply touched by the life story of
the protagonist, Fugui. This novel, written by the distinguished
Chinese author Yu Hua, tells the story of a Chinese man who
survives many hardships throughout his life. The book explores
themes of resilience, perseverance, and the power of family.
Fugui’s life takes many different turns, each of which is more
challenging than the last. His journey begins as a wealthy
landlord's son who indulges himself in gambling, opium, and
women. However, Fugui's life takes an unexpected turn when he
gambles away his family’s wealth and is forced to become a
peasant. In the following years, he experiences extreme poverty,
faces the terrors of war, and witnesses the loss of his entire family.
Throughout all these experiences, Fugui's spirit remains unbroken.
Despite the constant tragedies in his life, he retains his sense of
humor and his ability to appreciate the small pleasures of life. His
resilience and perseverance to survive even amidst the worst
circumstances reminded me of the importance of personal morality
and strength.
The novel's exploration of the power of family is also particularly
poignant. Fugui’s love for his wife and children is consistent
throughout the novel, even in the darkest moments of his life. The
way that he cares for them and remains committed to their well-being is an inspiring message about the importance of family.
The book also delves into the impact of political systems on
people's lives. Through Fugui's experiences, we see how the
Cultural Revolution, the Communist regime, and the authority of
the government can be both benevolent and oppressive. The book's
powerful message is that regardless of what political systems are in
place, life is ultimately about the individual experiences and
struggles.
The novel also presents the war as a destructive force that shatters
people's lives. Yu Hua draws a compelling parallel between the
disintegration of Fugui's world and the havoc of war. The novel's
power lies in its ability to evoke raw emotions and to challenge our
perceptions of war, personal morality, and human strength.
In conclusion, Yu Hua's "To Live" is a necessary and thought-provoking read. The novel challenges our preconceived ideas
about individual strength, family bonds, hardship, and political
systems. The story of Fugui teaches us that life is a journey full of
twists and turns, hardships and joys. Above all, we learn that the
strength of the human spirit allows one to endure even the most
difficult of circumstances.
