Pigeons in London have a bad reputation. Some people call them flying rats. And many blame them

for causing pollution with their droppings. But now the birds are being used to fight another kind of pollution in this

city of 8.5 million.

“The problem for air pollution is that it’s been largely ignored as an issue for a long time,” says Andrea Lee, who

works for the London-based environmental organization Client Earth. “People don’t realize how bad it is, and how it

actually affects their health.” London’s poor air quality is linked to nearly 10,000 early deaths a year. Lee says, citing(

)a report released by the city manager last year. If people were better informed about the pollution they’ re breathing,

she says, they could pressure the government to do something about it.

Nearby, on a windy hill in London’s Regent’s Park, an experiment is underway that could help—the first week of

flights by the Pigeon Air Patrol. It all began when Pierre Duquesnoy, the director for DigitasLBi, a marketing firm, won

a London Design Festival contest last year to show how a world problem could be solved using Twitter. Duquesnoy, from

France, chose the problem of air pollution.

“Basically, I realized how important the problem was,” he says. “But also I realized that most of the people

around me didn’t know anything about it.” Duquesnoy says he wants to better measure pollution, while at the same time

making the results accessible to the public through Twitter.

“So”, he wondered, “how could we go across the city quickly collecting as much data as possible?” Drones were his

first thought. But it’s illegal to fly them over London. “But pigeons can fly above London, right?” he says. “They

live—actually, they are Londoners as well. So, yeah, I thought about using pigeons equipped with mobile apps. And we

can use not just street pigeons, but racing pigeons, because they fly pretty quickly and pretty low.”

So it might be time for Londoners to have more respect for their pigeons. The birds may just be helping to improve

the quality of the city’s air.

1

What can we infer about London’s air quality from Paragraph 2?

A

Londoners are very satisfied with it.

B

The government is trying to improve it.

C

Londoners should pay more attention to it.

D

2

Duquesnoy attended the London Design Festival to _________.

A

entertain Londoners.

C

design a product for sale.

B

solve a world problem.

D

protect animals like pigeons.

3

Why did Duquesnoy give up using drones to fly across London?

A

Because they are too expensive.

C

Because they are forbidden.

4

Which can be the best title for the text?

A

Clean air in London.

C

London’s new pollution fighter.

B

Because they fly too quickly.

D

Because they fly too high.

B

London’s dirty secret.

D

Causes of air pollution in London.

Photography has opened our eyes to a multitude of beauties, things we literally could not have seen

before the invention of the frozen image. It has greatly expanded our notion of what is beautiful, what is aesthetically(

美上

) pleasing. Items formerly considered trivial, and not worth an artist's paint, have been revealed and honored by

the photograph: things as ordinary as a fence post, a chair, a vegetable. And as technology has developed, photographers

have explored completely new points of view: those of the microscope, the eagle, the cosmos.

What is it that delights the human eye and allows us to claim that a photograph is beautiful? Photography depends

on the trinity of light, composition, and moment. Light literally makes the recording of an image possible, but in the

right hands, light in a photograph can make the image soar. The same is true with composition. What the photographer

chooses to keep in or out of the frame is all that we will ever see - but that combination is vital. And the moment that the

shutter is pressed, when an instant is frozen in time, provides the whole image with meaning. When the three - light,

composition, and moment - are in balance, there is visual magic.

Light, composition, and moment come together in a photograph to bring us the ultimate reality: a view of the world

unknown prior to the invention of the camera. Before photography, the basic artistic rules of painting were rarely

broken. Images were made to please, not to capture reality. But as photography evolved, painterly rules were often

reacted in the pursuit of fresh vision. Photographers became interested in the real world, good and bad, and it was the

accidental detail that was celebrated. Photography invited the world to see with new eyes - to see photographically - and

all of the arts have drawn new inspiration from this change.

With these basic aesthetic tools, photographers have evolved from scientists longing to “fix” an image — any image

— to artistic revolutionaries. Photographs have created a new way of seeing, changed our ideas of beauty and, most

importantly, made art more democratic. They have given us visual proof that the world is grander than we imagined,

and that there is beauty, often overlooked,

in nearly everything.

1

Before the invention of photography, which of the following was least likely to appear in an artistic work?

A

A great person.

B

A lovely insect.

C

A grand building.

D

A beautiful landscape.

2

What is the function of paragraph 2?

A

To argue that photographic beauty is subjective.

B

To explain the evolution of the concept of beauty.

C

To describe the elements that make a successful photo.

D

To illustrate different types of photographic techniques.

3

How has photography affected other art forms?

A

It has reduced their popularity.

B

It has forced them to change their rules.

C

It has changed their methods of composition.

D

It has provided them with new points of view.

4

What does the author mean by saying photography has “made art more democratic" ?

A

It has expanded the concept of artistic beauty.

B

It has challenged the status of traditional art forms.

C

It has enabled the development of new artistic tools.

D

It has allowed more people to take part in creative activities.

One day a professor entered the classroom and told the students about a surprise test. After hearing that,

24.(8分)

all students were seated and waited for the test to begin. Now, the professor gave the test papers to all students with text

facing down on the desk. Once he was done with handing out the test to all students, he asked them to turn the test pages

and begin.

Students were confused to see that there was not a question but just a black dot in the center of the page. The

professor noticed the students’ facial expressions and told them, “I want you to write about what you see there.”

The students were still confused but got started with the test. At the end of the class, the professor took all answer

sheets and started reading each answer from each sheet in front of all students. All of them described about the black

dot and tried to explain its position. After the professor finished reading, the whole class was silent.

Now, the professor began to explain, “Don’t worry. I am not going to give you grades for this but I just want you to

think about something. Here everyone focused on the black dot and wrote about it but no one wrote about the white

paper. The same is with our lives. The white paper embodies our whole life and the black spot problems in our life.

Our life is a gift given to us by God, with love and care, and we always have reasons to celebrate---our friends

around us, the job that provides us our livelihood, the miracles we see everyday. Still we just focus on day to day

problems like health issues, lack of money, problems in relationships, etc. But we never see that these problems are very

small compared to everything we have in our lives.”

1

From the text we learn that _________.

A

the professor gave the students an unexpected test
