Closeness and independence are both important in our life. Though
all humans need both of them, women tend to focus on the first and men on the second.
It is as if their lifeblood ran in different directions.
These differences can give women and men differing views of the same situation, as
they did in the case of couple I will call Tracy and Brian. When Brian’s old high school
friend called him at work and announced he’d be in town on business the following
month, Brian invited him to stay for the weekend. That evening he informed Tracy that
they were going to have a houseguest, and that he and his friend would go out together
the first night to chat like old times. Tracy was upset. She was going to be away on
business the week before, and the Friday night when Brian would be out with his friend
would be her first night home. But what upset her the most was that Brian had made
these plans on his own and informed her of them, rather than discussing them with her
before extending the invitation.
Tracy would never make plans, for a weekend or an evening, without first checking
with Brian. She can’t understand why he doesn’t show her the same courtesy and
consideration that she shows him. But when she protests, Brian says, “I can’t say to my
friend, ‘I have to ask my wife for permission’!”
To Brian, checking with his wife means seeking permission, which implies that he is
not independent, not free to act on his own. To Tracy, checking with her husband makes
her feel good to know and show that she is involved with someone, that her life is bound
up with someone else’s.
Tracy and Brian both felt upset by this incident because it cut to the core of their
primary concerns. Tracy was hurt because she sensed a failure of closeness in their
relationship: He didn’t care about her as much as she cared about him. And he was hurt
because he felt she was trying to control him and limit his freedom.

Dr. Amanda Harris was ready for sleep since it was already 11 pm. The
phone rang. On the other end of the line was a woman about to break a promise. The
woman was her mother’s neighbor. Flora Harris had made the neighbor swear she
wouldn’t tell her daughter she’d had a heart attack and was in hospital. The neighbor

Flora Harris takes care of her husband, James, who’s 91 and has Alzheimer’s disease.
They live in their own home, and a caregiver comes to help them a few hours a day.
Amanda is one of many Americans facing the heartache of how to take care of
aging parents from afar. She’s often worried and guilty, not to mention busy with a
demanding job, two teenage daughters and the frequent trips to California.
In some ways, Amanda is lucky. She has the resources to make the trips to Los
Angeles. Plus, she is a doctor who treats the elderly. She’s treated countless patients
whose children live far away.
“But it’s still tough,” she says. “I can foresee what the next few years are going to
look like, and it’s not a pretty picture. There will come a time when my father won’t

Throughout our daily lives, we have known plenty of people and will

know more. But how can we tell if someone is trustworthy? In a paper published
recently in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, researcher gave us the
answer.
The researchers asked 101 adults from the United States to fill out a questionnaire
measuring their guilt-proneness(
内疚倾向
) in different situations as well as several other
qualities, and then play a short online game. In this game, Player 1 is given $1, which
they can choose to give to Player2. Any money given to Player 2 is then automatically
increased to $2.20. Player 2 can then decide whether to keep all of the money or behave
in a trustworthy way by returning a portion of the money to Player 1. The researchers
found more guilt-prone people were more likely to share the money with Player1.
Actually, in follow-up studies, guilt-proneness predicted trustworthiness better than
other personality qualities the researchers measured.
Why might guilt lead to trustworthy behavior? The researchers found people who
were guilt-prone also reported feeling an obligation to act in ethical(
合乎道德的
) and
responsible ways while interacting(
互动
) with their partners in the game. People who
are guilt-prone tend to avoid engaging in behavior that might harm or disappoint others.
If they do something bad, guilt encourages them to try to make things right again.
Then
,
how can we use this research to ascertain whether someone is trustworthy?
“One way to do this might be observe how they respond to experience regret,” lead
author Emma Levine, assistant professor at the University of Chicago Levine, explains.
Another way is to ask them to describe a difficult dilemma they faced in the past,
suggests co-author Taya Cohen, associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University. This
is particularly effective, Cohen and her colleagues have found, because it allows us to see
if they’re concerned about the effects their actions have on others.

The world’s population is projected to reach 11 billion by the end of the
century.
Feeding that many people will be a challenge, and it is further complicated by the
impact of climate change on agriculture. That is why some people advocate an unusual
way to boost the food supply and feed people sustainably by eating less meat and more
insects.
About 2 billion people already eat bugs. Mexicans enjoy chilly-toasted grasshoppers.
Thais tuck into cricket stir-fries and Ghanaians snack on termites. Insects are slowly
creeping on to Western menus as novelty items, but most people remain squcamish(
拘
谨
).
Yet there are three reasons why eating insects makes sense.
First, they are healthier than meat. There are nearly 2000 kinds of edible insects,
many of them packed with protein, calcium, fiber, iron and zinc. A small serving of
grasshoppers can contain about the same amount of protein as a similar sized serving of
beef, but has far less fat and far fewer calories.
Second, raising insects is cheap, or free. Little technology or investment is needed to
produce them. Harvesting insects could provide livelihoods to some of the world’s
poorest people.
Finally, insects are a far more sustainable source of food than livestock. Livestock

production accounts for nearly a fifth of all greenhouse-gas emissions, that’s more than
transport. By contrast, insects produce relatively few greenhouse gases and raising them
requires much less land and water. And they eat almost anything.
Despite all this, most Westerners find insects hard to swallow.
One solution is to use protein extracted from bugs in other products such as ready
meals and pasta sauces. Not having to look at the bugs and emphasizing the
environmental benefits might make the idea of eating insects a bit more palatable.
1
、
What is the direct reason why some people advocate eating insects?
A
.
Insufficient food supply B
.
Climate change
C
.
The rapid increase of population D
.
Insects’ high nutrition
2
、
From the passage, we can infer that .
A
.
eating insects is healthier than eating beef
B
.
eating insects is popular among westerners
C
.
eating insects can help people lose weight
D
.
eating insects causes less damage to the environment
3
、
How can we make it more acceptable to eat insects?
A
.
By closing your eyes when eating insects
B
.
By eating insects together with other food
C
.
By putting insects’ nutrients into other food products
D
.
By considering the environmental benefits of eating insects

What’s best to read this year?
Secrets I Know
(Random House Children’s Books, ages 3-7)
This tale written by Kallie George and pictured by Paola Zakimi follows a young
girl and her little friend as they move from rain to sunshine, from pleasant loneliness to
sweet friendship, and finally from adventures on earth to an exploration of the sky
above. The colors of Zakimi’s pencildrawings are calming and George’s poetic text tells
her story with simple language.
Pandora
(Clarion Books, ages 3-7)
The award-winning author Victoria Turnbull tells the story of a little fox Pandora.
Pandora lives alone. She makes herself a handsome home, but no one ever comes to visit.
Then one day something falls from the sky -- a bird with a broken wing. Little by little,
the bird helps Pandora feel less lonely. Turnbull’s watercolor and colored pencil
