ThisstandardisissuedunderthefixeddesignationE595;thenumberimmediatelyfollowingthedesignationindicatestheyearof

originaladoptionor,inthecaseofrevision,rinparenthesesindicatestheyearoflastreapproval.A

superscriptepsilon(e)indicatesaneditorialchangesincethelastrevisionorreapproval.

ThisstandardhasbeenapprovedforusebyagenciesoftheDepartmentofDefense.

1.1Thistestmethodcoversascreeningtechniquetodeter-

minevolatilecontentofmaterialswhenexposedtoavacuum

ametersaremeasured:totalmassloss

(TML)andcollectedvolatilecondensablematerials(CVCM).

Anadditionalparameter,theamountofwatervaporregained

(WVR),canalsobeobtainedaftercompletionofexposures

andmeasurementsrequiredforTMLandCVCM.

1.2Thistestmethoddescribesthetestapparatusandrelated

operatingproceduresforevaluatingthemasslossofmaterials

beingsubjectedto125°Catlessthan7310

3.1Definitions:

3.1.1collectedvolatilecondensablematerial,CVCM—the

quantityofoutgassedmatterfromatestspecimenthatcon-

densesonacollectormaintainedataspecificconstanttem-

peratureforaspecifiexpressedasa

percentageoftheinitialspecimenmassandiscalculatedfrom

thecondensatemassdeterminedfromthedifferenceinmassof

thecollectorplatebeforeandafterthetest.

3.1.2totalmassloss,TML—totalmassofmaterialout-

gassedfromaspecimenthatismaintainedataspecified

constanttemperatureandoperatingpressureforaspecified

alculatedfromthemassofthespecimenas

measuredbeforeandafterthetestandisexpressedasa

percentageoftheinitialspecimenmass.

3.1.3watervaporregained,WVR—themassofthewater

vaporregainedbythespecimenaftertheoptionalrecondition-

alculatedfromthedifferencesinthe

specimenmassdeterminedafterthetestforTMLandCVCM

materialsandisnotnecessarilyvalidforcomputingactual

contaminationonasystemorcomponentbecauseofdiffer-

encesinconfiguration,temperatures,andmaterialprocessing.

1.5Thecriteriausedfortheacceptanceandrejectionof

materialsshallbedeterminedbytheuserandbasedupon

specifiically,

TMLof1.00%andCVCMof0.10%havebeenusedas

screeninglevelsforrejectionofspacecraftmaterials.

1.6Theuseofmaterialsthataredeemedacceptablein

accordancewiththistestmethoddoesnotensurethatthe

5.1Thistestmethodevaluates,undercarefullycontrolled

conditions,thechangesinthemassofatestspecimenon

exposureundervacuumtoatemperatureof125°Candthe

massofthoseproductsthatleavethespecimenandcondense

onacollectoratatemperatureof25°C.

5.2Comparisonsofmaterialoutgassingpropertiesarevalid

at125°Csampletemperatureand25°Ccollectortemperature

stestedatothertemperaturesmaybecompared

onlywithothermaterialswhichweretestedatthatsame

temperature.

5.3Themeasurementsofthecollectedvolatilecondensable

materialarealsocomparableandvalidonlyforsimilar

collectorgeometryandsurfacesat25°shavebeen

testedatsampletemperaturesfrom50to400°Candatcollector

temperaturesfrom1to30°ken

atnonstandardconditionsmustbeclearlyidentifiedandshould

notbecomparedwithsamplestestedat125°Csampletem-

peratureand25°Ccollectortemperature.

4.3Afterthespecimenhasbeenweighedtodeterminethe

TML,theWVRcanbedetermined,ifdesired,asfollows:the

specimenisstoredfor24hat23°Cand50%relativehumidity

cimenmassafterthis

eseresultsandthespecimen

massdeterminedaftervacuumexposure,thepercentageWVR

isobtained.
