Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is the

traditional Chinese festival celebrated on the fifth day of the

fifth lunar month. This festival is considered to be the most

important festival in the Chinese lunar calendar, and it is

often compared to Christmas in the Western calendar.

TheOrigin of Dragon Boat Festival

The story behind the Dragon Boat Festival dates back to the

time of Emperor Wu of the Zhou dynasty (1046 BC - 256 BC). Legend

has it that Emperor Wu was camping out in the mountains when

he received a message that his beloved wife, Empress Dowager

Chen, had fallen into a well. Determined to save his wife,

Emperor Wu donned a suit of armor and scaled the well to retrieve

her. Unfortunately, he got stuck in the process and had to be

helped out by his soldiers. Upon his return to the palace,

Emperor Wu succumbed to fever and died within a few days.

Customs and Traditions of Dragon Boat Festival

During the Dragon Boat Festival, people eat zongzi (steamed

glutinous rice balls) and various other dishes that represent

good fortune and prosperity. Another important custom is the

wearing of dragon and lion masks, which are believed to bring

good luck and chase away evil spirits.

Another tradition associated with the Dragon Boat Festival

is the racing of dragon boats. Dragon boats are long, narrow

boats decorated with dragon and lion masks and often paddled
