第二部分 阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分) I was disheartened recently when I turned on the news to hear a story about a family who is
petitioning(请愿) the Hampton School Board to receive out-of-district compensation to place their daughter in an
out-of-district school due to racial bullying. I was disheartened because I know that even if this family wins their
petition, the root of the problem will still continue.
While there are many contributing factors to the rapid increase of the bullying, I believe that the root of this
problem lies within the restrictions of schools, or rather the teachers and administrators who allow bullying to happen
while feeding the line "We have a no-tolerance policy" to students and parents.
This family can move their daughter to a new school where she will feel safe to learn and grow, but they will leave
behind the problem of the educators at this school who let the racial bullying happen.
My son went to a private school in Concord. He was bullied on the play yard. The administration gave us the "No
tolerance" line, but did nothing to stop the bullying or change the climate of the school.
We pulled our son out of this school and placed him in another school. This school truly understands how to guide
students' acceptance of differences and embrace teachable moments so that bullying is a non-issue.
I truly hope that this family gets the out-of-district placement for their daughter. However, I am doubtful that the
school district will address the root of the problem.
1、The author felt disheartened probably because _____.
A.the family' s petition was turned down
B.the daughter of the family was bullied
C.the root of the problem won't be addressed
D.the family will receive the compensation if they win
2、According to the author, what is the main reason for the bullying increase?
A.This problem lies beyond schools.
B.The climate of schools is changeable.
C.Schools almost do nothing to stop the bullying.
D.Students don' t know how to accept differences.
3、What does the underlined expression "feeding the line" in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Sending a message.
C.Making criticism.
4、What happened to the author' s son?
A.He asked his parents to place him in another school.
B.He was treated in a very unpleasant way in a school.
C.He went to a private school in Concord and studied with the girl.
D.He attended a school which knew nothing about the "No tolerance" line.
B.Providing food.
D.Satisfying a desire.
22.(8分)Sometimes, you just can't help it. Maybe you're watching a sad movie, or thinking about the friend who
moved away. Next thing you know, you feel pressure in your throat, your eyes are watering, and you have tears running
down your cheeks.
According to Ad Vingerhoets, a professor of psychology at Tilburg University, in the Netherlands, who is one of the
few scientists in the world who have studied crying, there are three types of tears. Basal tears are the first type. They act
as a protective barrier between the eye and the rest of the World. Next are reflex tears. They wash your eyes clean when
something gets in them. Finally, there are emotional tears. “These are released in response to emotional states,” explains
Vingerhoets.
Scientists believe crying has something to do with how humans developed and learned to depend on each other.
“Humans are very complex social creatures,” says Lauren Bylsma, a professor at the University of Pittsburgh, in
Pennsylvania. "It seems that tears serve to arouse help and support from others,” She says.
Vingerhoets agrees, "I think that the reason why humans shed tears(流眼泪)has something to do with our
childhood, " he says. "that's the time when we are still dependent on adults for love and protection and care. The major
advantage of emotional tears is that you can target them at a specific person." Vingerhoets says this ability could have
come in handy in prehistoric times, when humans were living among dangerous animals. Tears were a safer way to get
attention. "In this case, it is better to use a silent signal to ask for help, "he says.
Vingerhoets and Byhma do frequent studies to better understand why humans cry. According to Byhma, there is
still much more to discover. "It's surprising, "she says, "how much we still don't know.”
1、In the scientists' opinion, crying is ________.
A.a sign of human evolution B.a result of human kindness
C.a cause of personal growth D.a means of relying on each other
2、The underlined phrase "this ability" in the last paragraph refers to the ability to ________.
A.seek help wisely B.aim tears at someone
C.cry emotionally D.appeal to other people
3、From the text, we learn that Ad Vingerhoets and Lauren Bylsma ________.
A.hold different opinions about the causes of tears
B.think positively of the effects of tears
C.are working together to study tears
D.have learned enough about tears
4、What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The types of tears B.The components of tears
C.The science of tears D.The opinions about tears
23.(8分)Climbing Without Ropes
The popular image of the mountain climber is of a person carefully climbing a steep cliff with a network of safety
ropes, but it is not the only kind. Many climbers now enjoy bouldering. It’s more accessible and better for the
environment.
What is bouldering?
Bouldering is a sport that involves climbing on, over, and around boulders up to approximately twenty feet above
the ground. Participants employ no safety ropes.
Bouldering Terms
Why boulder?
• improve your climbing skills by focusing on basics
• places to climb, such as climbing walls at gyms and parks,
easy to find
• less time commitment to bouldering than to mountain
climbing
• intellectual and physical enjoyment as one solves problems
“problem” that one must solve. The “solution” is the
sequence of moves one makes up and over a boulder.
Here is an example of a climber addressing a bouldering problem.
Figure 1: The climber has two routes she could take, one to the left and one to the right. The left one appears easier
because it has a jug within easy reach, but look what happens if she chooses that direction. She gets stuck on the rock
and has to go back down. Sometimes that is even more difficult than going up.
Figure 2: The climber takes the one to the right this time. Using a foothold and placing her right hand in a crimp,
she is able to lift herself up and locate other handholds. After only a few moves, she is able to throw her leg over the top
of the boulder and pull herself up.
jug: a very large handhold that is easy to use
problem: The path up a boulder is referred to as the
crimp: a very small handhold
foothold: a place where one may place a foot to aid in

24.(8分) Last year marked the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. There were events around the
world in memory of those who died in the conflict. We have picked out three of them in European countries. Let's take a
look.
Belgium
In a park, the famous Belgian artist Koen Vanmechelen had an exhibition called
Coming World, Remember Me. The
work consisted of 600,000 individual(个别的) clay sculptures, one for each person killed during the World War. In the
center of the exhibition was a big egg made of clay, symbolizing a new world.
UK
In a small town called Aldridge, almost 100 houses in one street were covered with 24,000 poppies and statues of
soldiers. They stood for the men from the area who had been killed in the war. The flowers were chosen because of a
poem written by the Canadian doctor John McCrea in 1915. They made people think of fields of blood.
France
The British artist Guy Denning arrived in La Feuille, a small town in the northwest of France, to stick life-size
drawings of soldiers who never came back home. Armed with glue and a brush, Denning stuck his drawings carefully on
walls. Before long 112 men, mainly young adults, were brought back to mind, if not to life.
1、What do we know about
Coming World, Remember Me?
A.It's the name of an exhibition.
C.It's a work standing for peace.

C.A Canadian doctor suggested them.
B.They showed the cruelty of war.
D.The fields were filled with them.
3、How was the end of World War I marked in France?
A.A memorial to the dead soldiers was built.
B.112 wounded soldiers in the war were helped.
C.Drawings of some dead soldiers were put up.
D.Young adults were encouraged to join the army.
25.(10分) “How can we live longer?” many people wonder. Being sociable looks like a good way to add years
to your life. Relationships with family, friends, neighbors, even pets, will all do the trick, but the biggest longevity (长寿)
boost seems to come from marriage or an equal relationship. The effect was first noted in 1858 by William Farr, who
wrote in 1858 by William Farr, who wrote that widows and widowers (鳏夫) were at a much higher risk of dying than
their married peers. Studies since then suggest that marriage could add as much as seven years to a man’s life and two
to a woman’s, The effect holds for all causes of death, whether illness, accident or self-harm.
Even though the odds are stacked against you (the conditions are not favourable to you), marriage can more than
compensate. Linda Waite of the University of Chicago has found that a married older man with heart disease can expect
to live nearly four years longer than an unmarried man with a healthy heart. Likewise, a married man who smokes
more than a pack a day is likely to live as long as a divorced man who doesn’t smoke. There’s a less pleasant
side, however, as partners are more likely to become ill or die in the couple of years following their spouses; death,
and caring for a spouse with mental disorder can leave you with some of the same severe problems. Even so, the odds
favour marriage. In a 30-year study of more than 10,000 people, Nicholas Christakis of Harvard Medical School
describes how all kinds of social networks have similar effects.
So how does it work? The effects are complex, affected by socioeconomic factor, health-service provision, emotional
support and other more physiological mechanisms (机制). For example, social contact can boost development of the
brain and immune system, leading to better health and less chance of depression later in life. People in supportive
relationships may handle stress better. Then there are the psychological benefits of a supportive partner.
A life partner, children and good friends are all recommended if you aim to live to 100. The best social network is
still being mapped out, but Christakis says: “People are interconnected so their health is interconnected.”
1、William Farr’s study and other studies show that ________.
A.social life provides an effective cure for illness
B.being sociable helps improve one’s quality of life
C.women benefit more than men from marriage
D.marriage contributes a great deal to longevity
2、What does the underlined word “compensate” in the second paragraph probably mean?
A.pay money
C.help recover
B.provide something had
D.increase damage
3、What does the author say about social network?
A.They have effects similar to those of a marriage.
B.They help develop people’s community spirit.
C.They provide timely support for those in need.
D.They help relieve people of their life’s burden.
4、What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.It’s important that we develop a social network when young.
B.To stay healthy, one should have a proper social network.
C.Getting a divorce means risking a reduced life span.
D.We should share our social networks with each other.
