A woman professor was giving a lesson to her students on stress management. As she raised a

glass of water, everyone in the class 1 they would be asked the “half-empty or half-full”

question.

2 , with a smile on her face, she asked the students, “How 3 do you think this

glass of water weighs?”

Answers called out 4 from 100ml to 300ml.

She quieted the students down and then replied, “It does not matter on the weight. It 5

on how long you hold it. If I hold it for a minute, it is OK. If I hold it for an hour, I will have an ache

in my right 6 . If I hold it for a day, my arm will feel numb. In each case, the 7 of the

glass of water doesn’t change, but the 8 I hold it, the heavier it becomes. Why?”

Lost in 9 , all the students kept silent and listened to the professor carefully.

“Our 10 and worries in life are like that glass of water. If we 11 our burdens all

the time, sooner or later, we will feel exhausted, even 12 to carry on.

13 you have to do is put all your burdens down, as 14 in the evening as

possible. Don’t carry 15 through the evening into the night; by doing this, we can get

16 next morning and are able to move forward.

More 17 than not, life gets terrible when we think too much. And the moment you

18 your burdens, you’ll find yourself feeling so much more relaxed.

So rather than being upset and feeling 19 for yourself, start doing something about it.

After all, life is too short to 20 yourself to anything that is not making you happy.

While high school does not generally encourage students to explore new aspects of life,

college sets the stage for that exploration.I myself went through this 41 process and found

something that has changed my 42 at college for the better:I discovered ASL-American

Sign Language (美式手语).

I never felt an urge to 43 any sign language entire family is hearing, and so

are all my 44 languages were enough in all my interactions (交往).Little did I

know that I would discover my 45 for ASL.

The 46 began during my first week at college.I watched as the ASL Club 47

their translation of a the hand movements and the very 48 of communicating

without speaking 49 I saw was completely unlike anything I had experienced in

the 50

.This newness just left me 51 more.

After that, feeling the need to 52 further, I decided to drop in on one of ASL club's

meetings.I only learned how to 53 the alphabet that instead of being discouraged by

my 54 progress, I was excited.I then made it a point to 55 those meetings and learn

all I could.

The following term, I 56 an ASL professor was deaf and any talking was

57

.I soon realized that the silence was not unpleasant. 58

, if there had been any talking,

it would have 59 us to learn , I appreciate the silence and the 60 way of

communication it opens.

Every year about 40,000 people attempt to climb Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in

Africa. They 61 with them lots of waste. The 62 might damage the beauty of the

place. The glaciers(冰川) are disappearing, changing the 63 of Kilimanjaro.

Hearing these stories, I’m 64 about the place

— other destinations are described as

“purer” natural experiences.

However, I soon 65 that much has changed since the days of disturbing reports of

66 among tons of rubbish. I find a 67 mountain, with toilets at camps and along the

paths. The environmental challenges are 68 but the efforts made by the Tanzania National

Park Authority seem to be 69 .

The best of a Kilimanjaro 70 , in my opinion, isn’t reaching the top. Mountains are

71 as spiritual places by many cultures. This 72 is especially evident on Kilimanjaro as

73 go through five ecosystems(生态系统) in the space of a few kilometers. At the base is a

rainforest. It ends abruptly at 3, 000 meters, 74 lands of low growing plants. Further up, the

weather 75

— low clouds envelope the mountainsides, which are covered with thick grass.

I 76 twelve shades of green from where I stand. Above 4, 000 meters is the highland

77 : gravel(砾石), stones and rocks. 78 you climb into an arctic-like zone with 79

snow and the glaciers that may soon disappear.

Does Kilimanjaro 80 its reputation as a crowded mountain with lines of tourists

ruining the atmosphere of peace?

I found the opposite to be true.

Thomas Jefferson and James Madison met in 1776. Could it have been any other

81 ?They 82 together starting then to further American Revolution and later to 83

the new system of government. Shared ambition produced a 84 perhaps incomparable in a

close relationship and cooperation. It 85 50 years. It included pleasure and the public service

but above them, there was shared 86 , and a common end on both sides. When he was ill,

heavily in debt, and worried about his very 87 family, Jefferson wrote to his longtime friend.

His words and Madison’s 88 remind us that friends are friends until death. They also 89

us that sometimes a friendship has an influence on things 90 than the friendship itself.

“The friendship has stayed alive between us now half a century, the 91 of our political

principles and pursuits (追求) have been sources of 92 happiness to me through that long

period. To myself you have been a very important part of my 93 and thoughts throughout life.

Take care of me when dead and be assured that I should 94 with you my last affections.”

Later Madison replied: “I was deeply 95 by our private friendship and political harmony

in the long period. If they are a source of 96 to you, what aren’t they not to be to me? Nothing

can 97 the happy consciousness of our pure 98 to the public good. I 99 believe

that enough evidence will find in its way to another generation to ensure, after we are gone, all

justice will be done.”

The year 1776 is extraordinary because of the 100 of Thomas Jefferson and James

Madison.

A man worked in a post office. His job was to handle all the 101 that had unclear

Yesterday someone stole my 104 .There was a hundred dollars in it, which was all the

The First Day of School

“How was school,Ben?” I asked my 121 after he began kindergarten this year.“The

work is too long and there's not enough time to 122

,”he replied with a deep sigh.

I couldn't help but remember Ben's mother,my daughter,and her 123 to the first day

of Julie 124 home that afternoon I asked her the same also

replied with a long, 125 face but her answer was a little different as she announced,“I didn't

learn to read today.”

What a(n) 126 for a little girl who thought she would 127 know how to read

her little books after the first day of school.I had to explain to her that she would 128 learn

to read but it didn't happen quite that fast.

My 129 went back to my school days again.I could almost 130 the chalk dust

in the air.I suppose few schools still use chalks and 131

.They have probably been 132

with newer equipment and large computer screens.

On the first day of school, the expectation was so 133 that I would be up early in the

morning and 134 long before it was time to leave for 135 about 6 blocks

to school in new shoes that felt tight and carried our small supplies inside of a cigar box from one of

the local 136

.The stores must have saved cigar boxes just to give to us 137

them from year to year until they fell apart.

The first day of school was a new beginning, 138 there might be disappointment on

that first doors of knowledge had been opened and we 139 great learning

is a significant 140 in our lives that most of us remember.

Making friends is a skill. Like most skills, it 141 patience. If you want to meet people

and make friends, you must be willing to 142 some action. You must first go where there

are people. You won’t make friends staying home 143 .

Joining a club or group, talking to those who like the same things 144 you do is much

easier. Or join someone 145 some activity.

Many people are 146 when talking to new people. 147 meeting strangers

means seeing the unknown. And it’s human nature to feel a bit 148 about the

unknown. Most of fears about 149 new people come from doubts about 150 . We

imagine other people are 151 us—finding us too tall or too short, too this or too that. But

don’t forget that they must be feeling the same way. Try to accept yourself 152 you are, and

try to put the other at ease. You’ll both feel more comfortable.

Try to act self-confident 153 you don’t feel that way when you 154 a room full

of strangers. Walk tall and straight, look at other people directly and 155 .

If you see someone you’d like to 156 , say something. Don’t wait for 157

person to start a talk.

Just meeting someone 158 does not mean that you’ll make friends with that person.

159 is based on mutual(相互的) likings(兴趣) and “give and take”. It takes time to 160

friendship.

“Father, I don’t like to go to school,” said Harry Williams one morning. “I wish you 161

let me stay at home. Charles Parker’s father doesn’t make him go to school.”

Mr. Williams took his little boy 162 the hand, and said kindly to him, “Come, my son. I

want to 163 you something in the garden.”

Harry walked into the garden with his father, who led him along 164 they came to a bed

in which peas(豌豆) were growing. Not a weed(杂草) was to be 165 about their roots.

“See how beautifully these peas are 166 , my son,” said Mr. Williams. “How clean and

healthy the vines(藤) look. We shall have a good 167 Now let me show you the vines in Mr.

Parker’s garden.”

Mr. Williams then 168 Harry to look at Mr. Parker’s pea vines.

After a few moments, Mr. Williams asked, “Well, my son, what do you 169 Mr. Parker’s

pea vines?”

“Oh, Father!” replied the little boy. “I never saw such 170 looking peas in my life! The

weeds are nearly as 171 as the peas themselves. There won’t be half a crop!” “ 172 are

they so much worse than ours, Harry?”

“Because they have been left to grow as they 173 I suppose Mr. Parker just planted them,

and never took any care of them 174 ”

“Yes. A garden will soon be overrun(超过) with weeds 175 it is not taken good care

of,” Mr. Williams 176 , “and so it is with the human garden. Children’s minds are like garden

beds. They must be 177 cared for. I send you to school in order that the garden of your 178

may have good seeds and 179 plentifully. Now which would you 180 , to stay at home

or go to school?”

“I would rather go to school,” said Harry.

alone on a beach in remote southwest Florida, I was so 181 to hear splashes(水溅声)coming from the water. As I walked in the 182 of the sounds, I saw a manatee(海牛)show its

head out of the water, 183 a great snuffling(带鼻音的) breath. It seemed that it was in

184 and trying to get out of it.

I’d never seen a 185 like this before. I wanted to ask for help, but there was no one

186 . So I went into the shallow water and went toward the animal. I came 187 enough to

make out the manatee. Then, a second manatee, much smaller, appeared beside it. 188 , the

other manatees were also moving toward me. Soon I was 189 by several manatees. I could

clearly see the larger manatee 190 the little one up with her flipper(鳍状肢) and pushed it to

the surface beside me.

As the two slipped underwater, two other manatees moved up from behind, one on either side,

191 gently against my body as they swam past. They circled and 192 the action, this

time 193 by the mother and her baby. I held my hand out touching their back as they passed

me. Since they obviously enjoyed touching me, I began 194 each of them as they swam by.

I stood there enjoying the scene, 195 to move, until finally the rising tide 196

me back to the shore. Later I knew exactly what took place that morning. The manatees involved me

in their celebration of a birth and I was welcome to meet the 197 member of their family.

During that unexpected scene, I felt more involved in the rhythms of 198 on our earth

than ever. Each year, I head for that 199 for a quiet little birthday picnic on the shore. After

all, you never know who might 200 up for your party.
