What does a purple folder icon like this mean in VS Code?

I'm trying to use code that's in a folder such as this and it's not accessible via import statement file paths like a regular folder. Can someone explain what this icon means and why it might be different than a regular grouping of files?

If it matters, it's a react project. I'm very new to react and web development in general.
