I'm trying to create a template repository in GitLab, but I might be misunderstanding how this functionality works on the platform.
What I want to achieve: I'd like to have a template repository with:
A predefined folder structure.
Some template files (e.g., configuration files, scripts, etc.).
A preconfigured .gitignore file.
This way, every time I start a new project of that type, I don’t need to manually recreate all these elements. Instead, I can just clone the template repository and start editing.
I’ve looked through GitLab’s documentation and settings but couldn’t find a clear way to mark a repository as a template or use it as a starting point for new projects.
Is there a built-in way to create and use template repositories in GitLab? If so, how can I set it up? If not, what’s the best alternative to achieve this workflow?
Thanks in advance for your help!
