I'm not sure that this is on-topic, but here goes. I'm setting up servers for a hosting provider, and I need to check that WordPress runs correctly. However, I don't actually use WordPress, so this can be difficult.

My installation defaults to the Twenty Twenty-Three theme, but actually includes all of 2022-2025. The previews under Appearance > Themes show just plain text for 2023, but nice colourful images for the other themes.

Now the dumb question: when I activate one of the other themes I'm expecting the sample front page to change (for 2025, the preview shows a colourful image of a couple of birds, with the text "Marshland birds at the lake..."). The sample page does change, but not very much - I don't get any images, and I don't get what I saw on the preview page.

Is this expected, or is the server set up incorrectly? There are no server error messages.

It's possible for themes to create sample content, but as far as I can tell that's still the exception rather than the norm. It's more typical to create at least a homepage with some dummy content including images, lists, headings, etc. Then when you switch themes, you'll still see that content but wrapped in the theme header, footer, and its styles.

Twenty Twenty Three is a very minimal text-only theme out of the box.
