When application layer work upon TCP, do we need to consider the application message size if we want to

When application layer work upon TCP, do we need to consider the application message size if we want to get better performence? As PMTU is most likely unavaliable, if we choose a size as 3000 which is much larger than 1500 which is the default MTU, or we choose 1400, do they have any difference? If have, please explain?
