一、belief的基本用法

1. 相信；信心(不可数名词)

I admire her belief in what she is doing.

我佩服她对自己工作所抱的坚定信心。

2. 看法；信念(不可数名词)

There’s a general belief that things will soon get better.

普遍认为情况很快就会好转。

Contrary to popular belief, he was not responsible for the accident.

与大家的看法相反，他对这事故没有责任。

3. 信仰；宗教信仰(可数名词)

His political beliefs grew out of his experience in the early twentieth century.

他的政治信仰来自他二十世纪早期的经历。

4. 常用结构：

beyond belief 令人难以置信

The hard life in the earth-stricken area was beyond my belief.

地震区艰难的生活令我难以置信。

Dissatisfaction with the government has grown beyond belief.

2. 认为有可能(接动词不定式或从句)

It’s believed that the couple have left Beijing.

据信那对夫妇已离开了北京。

The oil painting is believed to be worth as much as two million dollars.

那幅油画据估计价值高达二百万美元。

3. 认定；看作(接宾语从句)

The party believes that education is the most important issue facing the government.

该党把教育视为政府面临的最重要的问题。

4. 对某事表示吃惊或恼怒

I can’t believe how much better I feel today.

真想不到今天我感觉好多了。

5．笃信宗教(非及物动词)

The Smiths seldom go to church, but they believe.

史密期一家很少去教堂做礼拜,但他们笃信宗教。

6. 常用结构：

It is commonly believed that…人们一般认为……

It is commonly believed that a knowledge of English is a must in international trade.

人们普遍地认为英语知识在外贸中是必要的。

be believed to do sth. 有要认为，据信……

Tom is believed to be the first to come up with this suggestion.

人们认为汤姆是第一个提出这个建议的人。

I don’t believe it! (表示吃惊或不耐烦)

Not believe your ears/eyes不相信自己的耳朵或眼睛，对所闻或所见非常吃惊

I couldn’t believe my eyes when she walked into the room.

三、believe与believe in的区别

1. believe相信，相信某人说的话(即：相信某件事情的真实性，或强调某人说的话的真实性)；

believe in信赖、信任，信仰，其后宾语常为：宗教、理论、原则及可信任的人。

We need a leader we can believe in.

我们需要一个可以信赖的领导。

I believe you, but I don’t believe in you. (=I believe what you said, but I can’t trust you)

我相信你的话是真的,但我不信任你.

I really can’t believe that they would do me the favor. I haven’t believed in them, since I was

cheated by them weeks ago.

我实在不相信他们会帮我这个忙。自从几周前给他们骗过之后，我就已经不信任他们了。

2. believe in doing sth. 认为做某事好，可接受。

I don’t believe in hitting children.

我不赞成打孩子。

We all believe in doing morning exercise.

我们都相信早晨煅炼有好处。

3. believe in sb. /sth. 还可表示：相信某人/某事物的存在。

Do you believe in God?

你相信上帝吗？
