Afternoon everyone , glad here to share this time’s presentation with all of

you . And today my topic is Leisure Activities In Britain.

1. First I’m going to show you two groups of brief statistics of how the Britons

spend their free time. From the first one we can see ，generally， their leisure

time is divided into three main parts …which I think include …

2. The second group of statistics is a little bit specific .As we can see , …

3. Here I am to say that DIY used to be very popular in Britain but a recent

research suggests that Britons' love affair with DIY is waning(decline), and they

would rather employ someone else to do the home improvements.

Today I am not going to introduce all of the above , instead I choose several

kinds of activities that we might not be familiar with .

I divided the project into two part as Leisure at Home and Leisure outside the

Home.

About Leisure at Home , I select three aspects ——British Soap Opera，puzzle

and gardening.

OK ,then let’s begin with the British Soap Opera.

Well ,as we have known from those two groups of statistics, watching TV is a

very popular pastime in the UK . But what kind of programmes do British people

like to watch? Well, the most-watched TV programmes every week are very popular

dramas that are usually on at least four times every week. They are dramas based in

one neighborhood that try to describe ordinary life in the UK ——we call these

dramas ‘soap operas’ or ‘soaps’. British Soap Operas can be very very long,

and some of them have even lasted for several decades.

Let’s look at the two main popular ones .they are both very long .

1. The first one, Eastenders, which is called伦敦东区/东区人 in Chinese , set in the

East End of London. You know that , the former East End usd to be regarded as a

slum , where poor people gathered to live, including the famous “Jack the

Ripper”(for 开膛手杰克 in Chinese ). And now , the place has attracted many

talented young artists and designers. The drama started in 1985 and is still

continuing to be on till now by BBC . Here is the screenshot(截图) for Eastenders

from the official website of BBC. And we can see… till now ,it has lasted for 28

years.

2. The second one, is considered to be more famous. That is Coronation Street .

In Chinese means 加冕街. It is set in a suburb of Manchester and it’s supposed

to represent working class life in the north of England. Also ,it is regarded as the

UK's longest-running TV soap as it has been on since 1960 , lasting for 53 years.

And the mark in the right picture is in memory of its 50th anniversary , in 2010. It is

also said that Coronation Street is the Queen’s favorite TV soap and have won

many big prizes in Britain .

Then let’s move on to the second part about Leisure at Home. That is——

puzzle.

You know that ,nearly three quarters of people in the UK now do some sort of

puzzle, from newspaper crosswords and coffee-break teasers to puzzles in

magazines and even taking part at home in TV shows. And we can see how

popular puzzle is in Britain .

 Of course ,most of us have played it when we were young ,and now let’s

have a small review for it.

When we are doing a Cross Word Puzzle, we are supposed to do …the first

across line … the word consist of 9 letters and it is easy to come up with the

word “honeymoon”. Also ,the following steps are just similar . In particular,

we will often have a special sense of achievement when we have finished the

whole puzzle.

 I am sure you know the famous handsome guy ——yes he is Beckham . But

do you know what he is doing? He seems to enjoy it a lot . Yes, he is doing a

Cross Word Puzzle. The two pictures are also my screenshot, from the

publicity film of 2012 London Olympic games(2012伦敦奥运宣传片). Later I

will show the film.

 Ok ,here the two pictures are Puzzle of Downton Abbey selling in a

Britain shop or on the internet. But here , puzzle doesn’t mean 字谜 but

means 拼图 in Chinese. Of course , they are also very popular.

Then let’s move on to the last part about Leisure at Home. That is——

gardening.

 The British are known as a nation of gardeners and are called good green

fingers. Most Britons have a garden on their property. Gardening has been a

popular pastime since Roman times. Many people in Britain are proud of their

houses & gardens. They want their houses & gardens to look nice.

 And then let’s take a look at an excerpt(节选，摘录) from an interview with

a BBC horticulturist. Here we need to take several point that …

And finally I am going to introduce the Chelsea Garden Show .

 Chelsea Garden Show is known as the annually traditional garden show in

Britain as well as the most famous and extraordinary garden show in the world.

In Britain , it is said that there are three affair that will cause traffic jam ——the

first one is the Queen’s cruise, the second one is the football team’s

triumphant return(凯旋), and the last one is ,of curse, Chelsea Garden Show.

 Chelsea Garden Show was first held in London in 1913. And this year is its 100th

anniversary

. And here are three pictures of the design sketch of this year’s

ShowGardens.

Ok ,then ,let’s move on to the second big part ——Leisure outside the Home,

which also includes three aspects ——Britain pub culture，Gambling，and sports

First, Britain pub culture.

• Well ,you know, One thing British is famous for is pubs, and no trip to the UK

would be complete without a visit to one of the thousands of pubs across

the country, as going to the pub is the most popular leisure activity outside

the home . Pubs play an important part not only in British life but also in the

social structure of the country. They are places where all ages and social

classes mix to talk, do business, or just spend a couple of quiet hours before

heading home in the evening. Pub culture is designed to promote sociability

in a society known for its reserve. So we call it a kind of “culture”.

• Next I am going to show you several pictures of Activities in pubs. These

are the ones we are familiar with ,such as … and the three are not

familiar to us. They are called… I think it should be interesting to play

these games.

Then let’s take a look at the second part about Leisure outside the

Home——Gambling

 It is very interesting to hear that the Britons regard themselves as the nation

keen on gambling most as well as Chinese in the world . They gamble

almost everything , on bets placed at Bookies (as the picture shows,…),on

football pools ,on horse racing, even on Her Majesty ,the queen ,would wear

what color for her arrival or if there would be a UFO in the ceremony of

2012 London Olympic games.

 And what I want to introduce is the National Lottery .

 You may not understand why there are so many Britons buying Lottery,

then let’s look at the highest fortune it has provided. Yes ,it’s …

incredibly , it ‘s nearly equal to the whole property that Beckham owns.

 We should also notice that …

Finally ,last part ,also a very important part of Britons’ outdoor leisure

activities is sports.

The first one——soccer. It is American English ,and we can also call it

football in British English.

You know, that Football is undoubtedly the most popular sport in England, and

has been played for hundreds of years. It has become a kind of culture rather

than sport in Britain.

❖ Some of England's football teams are world famous, the most famous being

Manchester United, Arsenal(阿森纳) and Liverpool..

❖ The highlight of the English football year is the FA (short for the Football

Association) Cup Final each May.

And there are several interesting phenomenon referring to Britons’ love for

football.

❖ For British people, football is a must in their daily life. After work, most

shops are closed except pubs. Many people think that evening life in Britain

is dull ,but in fact, most evening life exists in pubs, and watching the football

games is an important part of the pub culture. As we can see from the first

picture, these British man are now watching the football games in the pub

and cheering for their favorite team.

❖ And also , It’s said that for a British man, maybe he cannot keep loyal to his

wife, but he is usually loyal to his team.

❖ More interestingly, there seems to be a phenomenon that a fan’s loyalty to

a team often descends to his son. The reason why a fan likes his team is that

his father or grandfather, even grand-grand-father is the fan of the team &

he is strongly influenced by them in his childhood.

The nation really shows a great enthusiasm and talent for football.

The second kind of sport I am going to introduce is Rugby .

 Rugby is similar to football, but played with an oval ball. Players can carry

the ball & tackle each other. The best rugby teams compete in the Super

League final each September.

 For many years rugby was only played by the upper classes, but now it is

popular all over the country. There are two different types of rugby - Rugby

League, played mainly in the north of England, & Rugby Union, played in

the rest of England, Scotland, Wales & Ireland. England, Scotland, Wales &

Ireland, together with France & Italy, play in an annual tournament called

the Six Nations.

The third one , which is also very famous , is tennis.

❖ And The world's most famous tennis tournament is the Wimbledon

Championship. (as we are familiar with the word 温网 in Chinese ). It

started at a small club in the London suburb of Wimbledon since 1877. It is

still played on grass courts.

❖ The tournament takes place over 2 weeks in late June & early July, at a time

when England often has the finest weather. Millions of people watch the

Championships on TV live.

Next , that is Horse racing.

❖ As we know , it is a very popular spectator sport with meetings being held

every day throughout the year.

❖ Also, People can place bets on the races at legal off-track betting shops.

❖ Here I want to mention Ascot (阿斯科特), a small town in the south of

England, becomes the centre of horse-racing world for one week in June. It's

called Royal Ascot because the Queen always goes to Ascot. She has a lot of

racehorses & likes to watch racing.

Finally, that is Fox Hunting. It is a very traditional British leisure activity.

 Traditionally Boxing Day is a day for fox hunting. The huntsmen &

huntswomen ride horses. They use dogs, too. The dogs (fox hounds

猎狐狗) follow the smell of the fox. Then the huntsmen &

huntswomen follow the hounds.

 But now the tradition of the December 26th is changing. Now, some

people want to stop Boxing Day hunts (& other hunts, too). They

don't like fox hunting. For them it is not a sport - it is cruel.

Apart from these sports, I also want to introduce Class consciousness British

hold towards sport.

And also ,there are other various …

And at the end of the presentation , let’s go to enjoy the publicity film of

2012 London Olympic games I have just mentioned. It shows a lot of

interesting aspects about British life.

understanding for leisure activities in Britain . and anyway , Thank you for your
