My Favorite Chinese New Year Photos
Chinese New Year is the biggest and most exciting holiday
for my family! We get to spend time together, eat lots of
delicious food, and take part in fun traditions. My favorite part is
when we go out to take photos - I just love capturing all the
beautiful decorations and festivities with my camera. Let me tell
you about some of my favorite Chinese New Year photos from
this year!
The first one I really like is a picture I took of the big dancing
lion at the parade near our home. Every year, there is a huge
parade with these incredible lion and dragon dances. The lions
are so colorful and vibrant, with bright reds, golds, and greens. In
this photo, the lion is mid-jump with its mouth wide open. You
can see all the dancers underneath making the lion "come alive".
I positioned myself at just the right angle to get this awesome
action shot as the lion leapt through the air. I'm so proud of how
I timed it perfectly to freeze the motion.
Another great one is a close-up I snapped of the Chinese
lanterns hung along the street. The lanterns are such a
quintessential part of the New Year's decorations. This photo has
a lantern right in the center, glowing a warm red-orange color.
The black characters for "Fortune" are clearly visible on the
lantern. Surrounding it is a blurred background of more lanterns
in various shades of red, yellow, and pink. I used a low aperture
to get that nice shallow depth of field and make the main lantern
really pop. The soft lighting gives it such a cozy, festive feeling.
My next favorite is a portrait I took of my little cousin Lily
dressed up in her cute new traditional dress. For New Year's, kids
often get new clothes, sometimes even a small red envelope with
money from their parents. Lily looks so adorable in her bright red
dress with the pretty floral designs. Her cheeks are nice and rosy
from the excitement of the day. She has the biggest smile
because she had just opened her little red envelope right before
this. I framed the shot from her eye level to focus just on her
happy face and colorful outfit. The blurred background hints at
the New Year's decorations around her. Doesn't she just radiate
joy?
Then there's the photo I snapped of the whole family around
the table for our annual New Year's Eve dinner. We make sure to
get everyone together for this big feast with all the traditional
dishes like dumplings, noodles, fish, and niangao. My photo
captured the moment when we all raised our glasses for the New
Year's toast. There's my parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and
cousins all crowded around. Everyone has such warm smiles as
they clink their glasses together. You can see the beautiful red
tablecloth underneath, along with all the plates and dishes
spread out. I angled the shot from slightly above to fit everyone
in. It's one of those images that really shows the spirit of family,
togetherness, and celebration during this holiday.
My last favorite is a simple still life I arranged of some of the
New Year foods and decorations. In the center is a plate with a
whole steamed fish - leaving it whole symbolizes togetherness
and abundance in the new year. Surrounding the fish are pieces
of niangao (those delicious sticky rice cakes), a few mandarin
oranges for wealth and good fortune, some inedible liuli
decorative ornaments, a small Buddhist figurine for blessings,
and a sprinkling of Chinese red firecrackers for good luck. I
played around with the lighting to get those nice highlights and
shadows bringing out all the textures and details. The
composition has excellent use of color and layering, if I do say so
myself! I'm really proud of how this one turned out.
So those are some of my top shots capturing the festive
spirit and traditions of Chinese New Year this year. I had so much
fun going around with my camera to all the different
celebrations and events in my city. Photography lets me record
all the special moments and intricate decorations of this beloved
holiday. I feel likeI can relive the excitement and joy every time I
look back at these images. They are little windows into all the fun
I had ringing in the new year with my loved ones. I already can't
wait for next year's new adventures and photo ops - maybe I'll
discover even more creative ways to immortalize the holiday
through my lens!
