Unit 2: Learning and Practicing English Reading
Wow, reading in English is really cool! I used to think it was
super hard and boring, but my teacher Mrs. Lee has shown our
class lots of fun ways to practice. She says reading is like a
superpower that lets us go on adventures and learn new things.
I'm going to share what we've been doing in Unit 2 to get better
at English reading.
First up, we played this awesome game called "Word
Detectives." Mrs. Lee put up vocabulary words on the board,
along with pictures giving clues about their meanings. We had to
use our detective skills and prior knowledge to figure out the
definitions. It was like cracking a code! I'll never forget what
"determined" means now since the picture showed someone
climbing a huge mountain.
Next, we learned pre-reading strategies. Mrs. Lee taught us
to scan the text first by looking at titles, subheadings, pictures
and captions. This helps activate our prior knowledge about the
topic. It's kind of like a movie preview that gets you excited
about the main show. We also learned to think about what we
already know and make predictions before diving into the full
reading.
Speaking of predictions, we do an activity called
"Anticipation Guides" sometimes too. Mrs. Lee will list several
statements related to the reading passage, and we have to mark
whether we agree or disagree with each one before reading.
Then after reading, we revisit our answers and discuss what we
learned. It really gets our brains engaged from the very start!
Of course, we can't forget the actual reading part. But even
here, Mrs. Lee has neat strategies to make it more interactive.
One technique is called "Think-Alouds" where she models
reading a short excerpt out loud, stopping periodically to share
her thoughts and questions. Then we practice doing the same
with partners. It helps us stay focused and understand better.
We also use sticky notes to track our thoughts, reactions,
connections, and any words we need to look up. Mrs. Lee says
letting our minds wander while reading is normal, but the sticky
notes rein us back in. It's kind of like a movie director calling
"Cut!" and making us re-focus on the important scenes.
