Traveling on an airplane can be a very tiring task even in the best of circumstances,

which is why when Sophie Murphy boarded a recent flight from Sydney to Melbourne and

noticed an awful “tension” in the cabin, she first thought it was caused by typical

bad-tempered passengers. But as the flight neared its end, it became obvious that something

was very wrong.

A teenage boy with Down syndrome(

唐氏综合征

)who was traveling with his family had

become upset and would not return to his seat, regardless of the cabin crew's warnings over

the loudspeaker when it was almost time to land. The pilot was forced to circle above the

airport, delaying the landing and angering people on the already tense flight.

“If it was a cartoon, ” remembered Murphy, “there would have been smoke coming out

of people's ears.”

As the boy's elderly parents and adult brothers and sisters tried to persuade him to get off

the floor and back into his seat, but in vain, Murphy, 42, who had been a teacher for more

than 20 years, stood up and quickly headed to the back of the plane.

She found the boy in the passage, lying on his belly, and lay down on her stomach to

face him. She began chatting calmly with him, asking his name, his favorite book, and his

favorite characters. He told her he felt sick and she tried to comfort him. Minutes later, he

allowed her to hold his hand and then together they got properly back into airplane seats.

Murphy asked for sick bags, and held them as the boy threw up several times, including on

her. As she helped him clean up, she repeatedly told him everything would be okay and that

they'd get through it together.

After the plane was finally able to land, no one was impatient to step off the flight as one

might expect. Instead, calmed passengers--obviously following Murphy's amazing

example--allowed the boy and his family to depart first, smiling at them as they passed. His

parents tearfully thanked Murphy for what she had done, and a doctor sitting nearby also let

The sun is going to expand into the orbit of Mercury according to scientific calculations,

which will result in the entire Earth catching on fire. Who will save the world?

This imaginative tale is at the heart of the latest Chinese sci-fi movie The Wandering

Earth. Unlike many American space-themed films where the solution to a disaster Earth faces

is always fleeing (

逃离

) the planet in spaceships, this time we’re taking the Earth with us.

The film, which has become the country’s most successful film of all time, has offered

a

different and more ambitious idea.

The “ambition” didn’t come from nowhere. For thousands of years, “homeland” has had

a soft spot in the hearts and minds of Chinese people. One old idiom that shows a strong

feeling that Chinese people have had for their homeland is “luoyeguigen”, which means

returning to one’s homeland in old age, like fallen leaves returning to the roots of their tree.

“What is Chinese sci-fi?” Guo Fan, the film’s director, said in an interview. “A vehicle

that really expresses our cultural and spiritual core (

核心

) can be called Chinese sci-fi.

Otherwise, we’re just following others and telling the same Hollywood stories.”

B

Patient and enthusiastic.

D

Kind and cool-headed.

And the makers of The Wandering Earth may have chosen the best time to tell its

Chinese sci-fi story. The film was released on Feb. 5, the first day of Chinese New Year. It

was a time when many people had just made the hard journey back to their hometowns. So to

them, there is only one possible way to tell the story: Earth goes wherever humans go,

because it’s our home.

8

The main purpose of the opening paragraph is to __________.

A

give a brief account of the film

B

warn people of the coming threat

C

explore ways to avoid the disaster

D

introduce the topic of the passage

9

A

B

C

D

helping Earth make its escape

10

Which of the following is unlikely to account for the success of the film?

A

The rich imagination of the story.

B

Hollywood-style space stories.

C

D

The time chosen to release the film.

11

What is likely to be the title for the passage?

Chinese Sci-Fi Catches Up

Have you been exercising and eating healthy, but when you step on the scale, it says

you’ve gained a few pounds? “That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean that your workouts are not

effective”, says Jeffrey A

Dolgan, an exercise physiologist in Miami Beach, Florida.

“A person’s scale mass (

质量

) is a combination of muscle, fat, bone, blood, and even the

air that we carry in our lungs,” he says. “Immediately after a workout routine, the percentage

of mass in each body part can shift as much as 15 percent. So if you’re gaining weight while

working out and eating healthy, it’s probably not the type of weight gain that you think it is.

The scale can’t tell you how much of your body weight is muscle or fat, which means if

your goal is to improve your fitness level, the scale is not the best tool for measuring

improvements. When you start to change your body composition with your workouts — by

building more muscle mass and decreasing your body fat — your scale weight may increase,

while your body fat percentage may decrease. These changes happen over weeks and months

(not hours or days) so the scale is useless when tracking them.

You may argue that you weigh a few pounds less after a high intensity (

强度

) training

class. Don’t get too excited—it’s just water loss due to sweat. Water makes up approximately

65 to 90 percent of a person’s weight, and variation in water content of the human body can

move the scale by ten pounds or more from day to day.

So ignore the scale and pay more attention to objective measurement tools like body

composition. Keep in mind that if you’re exercising but gaining weight, you may actually

look slimmer.

12

What can we know from Dolgan’s words from paragraph 2?

A

Your weight changes little during a day.

B

Your scale mass is affected by many factors.

C

Your workout is not effective if you gain weight.

D

Your weight is determined only by muscle and fat.

13

What will most probably happen after you exercise and eat healthy for 3 months?

A

You will weigh more.

B

Your muscle mass will decrease.

C

Your body fat will increase.

D

Your body composition will change.

14

How much water may a man weighing 150 pounds have in his body?

A

30 pounds.

C

100 pounds.

B

60 pounds.

D

140 pounds.

15

Which of the following could be the best title for the text?

A

Why Do We Gain Weight?

B

How to Work Out Effectively?

C

What Is the Composition of Our Body?

D

Why Does My Workout Cause Weight Gain?
