US

如果你去另外一个国家，你想买哪些东西呢？If you

go to another country, what kinds of things would you buy? Would you buy a

camera in Japan, some beautiful clothes in France, or a watch in Switzerland? 在日

本你会买相机吗？在法国买漂亮的衣服？在瑞士买块手表？无论你会买什么，你也许会认

为那些产品一定就是那些国家制造的。No matter what you buy, you might think those

products were made in those countries.可是，你可能想错了。However, you could be

wrong.康健是名来自上海的17岁的学生。Kang Jian is a 17-year-old student from

Shanghai.去年他去旧金山拜访了自己的叔叔婶婶。Last year he went to visit his aunt

and uncle in San Francisco.他发现了一个有趣的事，当地商店里很多产品都是中国制造

普通物件中的美 Beauty in common things

中国每个不同的地区都有自己独特的传统艺术品。Each different part of china has

its own special forms of traditional art.这些艺术品通常表达的是那些生活中重要的东

西，诸如爱、美和家庭。These usually try to show the things that are important in life,

such as love, beauty and family最普通的东西，从纸到黏土再到竹子，都能变成美丽的

物品。The most common things, from paper to clay to bamboo, are turned into

objects of beauty.

根据中国历史，孔明灯最早就是诸葛亮在身处困难的时候用来寻求帮助的。According

to Chinese history, sky lanterns are first used by Zhuge Kongming. He sent them

out to ask for help when in trouble.现在，孔明灯用于过节和其他庆祝活动。Today, sky

lanterns are used at festivals and other celebrations.孔明灯用竹子做成，竹子外面用

纸包裹。They are made of bamboo and covered with paper.孔明灯点燃后，像小小的

热气球一样慢慢地升上天空，所有人都能看到。When the lanterns are lit, they slowly

西。The most common pictures are flowers, animals, and things about Chinese

spring festival, they are put on windows, doors and walls as symbols of wishes for

good luck and a happy new year.

中国陶泥艺术也很著名，那些艺术品很小，但是看上去特别逼真。Chinese clay art is

famous because the clay pieces are so small but they look very real.小陶泥艺术品通

常取材于可爱的孩子们、中国神话故事或历史故事中的人物。The pieces are usually cute

children or lively characters from a Chinese fairy tale or historical story.制作这些小

物件要用一种非常特殊的黏土，先用手小心翼翼进行造型，然后风干。The pieces are

carefully shaped by hand from a very special kind of clay and then allowed to

air-dry.干了之后还要高温烧制，然后再抛光上漆。After drying, they are fired at a very

high heat. They are then polished and painted.要花好几个星期才能完成这些工序。It

takes several weeks to complete everything.这些小小的陶泥艺术品表达了中国人民对

生活和美的热爱。These small pieces of clay art show the love that all Chinese people

have for life and beauty.

I know! the zipper!

保罗：拉链？the zipper?它真是这样一项了不起的发明吗？is it really such a great

invention?

罗伊：想想在我们的日常生活中会多么频繁地使用它吧。think about how often it’s

used in our daily lives.你能看见拉链在裙子、裤子、鞋子、背包上…几乎无处不在！you can

see zippers on dresses, trousers, shoes, bags^ almost everywhere.

保罗：看来你说的确实有点道理。well, you do seem to have a point.

保罗：当然！of course!我想到它是因为我上周看了一个网站。I thought about it

because I saw a website last week.不同发明的创始者都被列在上面。the pioneers of

different inventions were listed there. 比如说，它提到拉链是在1893年被惠特科姆贾

一项偶然的发明an accidental invention

know that tea, the most popular drink in the world(after water), was invented by

accident?许多人都认为大约在5000年以前就开始了饮茶。Many people believe that

tea was first drunk about 5,ooo years ago. 据说一位叫做神农的中国统治者最早发现

了茶可以饮用。it is said that a Chinese ruler called Shen Nong was the first to

discover tea as a drink.一天，神农在户外的炉火上烧水， one day shen nong was

boiling drinking water over an open fire.茶树上有几片叶子掉入水里，过了一会，some

leaves from a tea plant fell into the water and remained there for some time.散发出

These stars encourage young people to work hard to achieve their dreams.
