bother,

这些动词都表示两种情形之一：一是一个人主动惹恼他人，二是一个人因其它人的行

为而引起的不必要的不安。这些动词中一些既可以表主动，也可以表示被动的含义。其它

的动词则只专注其中的一种含义。

Bother, disturb和plague都可以表示主动和被动两种意义。在表被动时，bother

通常表示可来可去的微小抱怨：frequently bothered by a slight stiffness in his joints.

Disturb更加强烈，其最极端的用法专门表示精神上的扰乱：the mentally disturbed

patient. 在更温和的用法里，disturb所指的不安状态比bother所指的更加深刻：I was

bothered by the lack of news at first, but now, after a month, I am really disturbed.

Plague的被动含义也许是这些动词中最强烈的，只表示一种特殊的不安，即反复无休止

地在脑海中翻腾的不安。那些被想法或周围环境plague的人既无法控制烦扰他们的事物，

也无法阻止这些事物在他们不稳定的头脑中反复重现：plagued by constant

recollections of his long-dead wife; plagued by the odor in the packing plant;

plagued by a continuing lack of money.

这三个相同的动词bother, disturb和plague的主动含义在影响程度上有一点不同。

其中，disturb是强度最弱的。例如，一个人也许会无意地disturb另一个人，其行为并

不刻意针对后者：Did my whistling disturb you? Bother在这里要强于disturb，它可

以表示故意行为：Just pay the bill and I'll stop bothering you. Plaugue在表主动意义

的时候比被动意义更加强烈，表示反复的，故意地着魔一般的恼乱：The bill collector

plagued us with unrelenting phone calls, letters,and threats.

Touble 和worry大体上只有被动的含义，表示对某件事情的不安。【I am troubled

by the doctor's report; I'm worried that I'll fail the exam.】两个动词比bother 的被动

含义语气更强，而比disturb的要弱一些。Touble比worry要稍微正式一些，表示警惕

是有特定原因的。worry表示不适的原因并不清晰，特别暗示对某事物结果的不确定。

Touble的包容性也更强，它没有worry所包含 的沉浸于无用和无益的思想活动的意思。

相反，pester和harass几乎只有主动扰乱别人的含义。【The platton sergeant

constantly harassed the recruits in ingeniously excruciating ways; stop pestering

me!】两个动词都比diturb甚至bother 的语气要强。Pester有点像plague，表示反复

故意地打扰别人，但是只限制于琐碎的事情。Harass则强烈得多，甚至达到体罚或更加

严重的地步：employers sexually harassing their female employees. Harass在这种情

况下甚至可以比plague更强烈，因为后者没有身体暴力的含义。
