HKUST MBA Program – Application Instructions
I. Admissions Procedures
1. Admissions Timetable
The HKUST MBA program intake 2010 will start in August 2010.
Below is the admissions timetable:

International students requiring student visa to study in Hong Kong are strongly recommended to apply
for the first round to allow sufficient time for visa application once they are admitted.
2. Application Materials
A completed application should include ALL of the following items:
1. A complete online application form; and
2. Three online reference forms; and
3. Application fee of HK$1000 (~US$129); and
4. Supporting documents:
- transcript of undergraduate and/or postgraduate studies; and
- official GMAT report and/or TOEFL/IELTS report (if applicable); and
- documentary proof of professional qualifications (if applicable)
Supporting Documents
Please note scanned or faxed copies (except online reference forms) of the supporting documents will be
sufficient at the application stage. You are not required to provide the originals or certified true copies
until you are attending a face-to-face interview or as required by the MBA Office, whichever happens
earlier.
We only accept supporting documents in English. Any certificates/documents that are not in English
should be accompanied with an officially certified translation.
When the applicants are required to provide certified true copies of the originals, the copies must be
officially certified by the issuing authorities with their imprint and signature.
Document Submission
Supporting documents should reach the MBA Office by the application deadline.
There are 3 ways for submissions:
1. Document Upload (strongly recommended)
One convenient way to submit your supporting documents is by uploading softcopies. The Document
Upload function is available after your application fee is settled. Once activated, you can upload your
documents anytime while you are completing the application form. Application management and
document submissions will be made easy.

3. Postal mail to the HKUST MBA Program Office
Please write your full name and reference number on all documents. For (3), please allow sufficient
delivery time and ensure that the documents will reach our office by the application deadline.
If you have chosen the Shenzhen Part-time MBA program as your first choice, you can either upload your
documents online or send them to our Shenzhen MBA Program Office.
3. Application Fee
The application fee is HK$1000 (~US$129) and can be paid by:
i. Online credit card payment through the online application platform;
ii. Cash deposit to Hang Seng Bank: 024 262 324999 014 (account name: HKUST);
iii. Bank draft made payable to "The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology"
The original pay-in slip in (ii) and bank draft in (iii) should be mailed to the MBA Program Office. The fee is
non-refundable.
4. Short-listing and Interview
Short-listing
Short-listed applicants will be notified for an interview within 8 weeks after the application deadline.
Interview
Part-time Program (Hong Kong/Shenzhen): face-to-face interview will be arranged for short-listed
candidates.
Full-time Program: face-to-face interview for short-listed applicants resided in Hong Kong or nearby;
otherwise a video interview via internet will be arranged. Applicants will need to prepare a web camera
and microphone for the video interview.
While attending the face-to-face interview, applicants should produce the originals or certified true
copies of undergraduate and/or postgraduate transcripts, and/or those of other supporting documents.
5. Admissions Offer
An admissions decision will usually be sent to candidates within 12 weeks after the application deadline
via postal mail.
Upon receiving the admissions offer, candidates will be required to indicate acceptance by returning a
signed acceptance form and placing a deposit. Newly admitted candidates are expected to work with the
MBA office closely to prepare for their admissions and MBA studies.
At HKUST we will start the MBA program in August with a 5-day Residential Program, including a 3-day
intensive course of Preparing to Lead and a 2-day Experiential Learning Program. Attendance at the
Residential Program is mandatory.
II. Completing the Online Application
Below are some instructions you may find helpful when completing the online application:
1. Personal Particulars
Name
Please put the Surname, First name, and/or Middle name fields as shown in your identification
documents (e.g. HKID or passport). For the Preferred Name, please put the name you prefer to be called
for communication purposes.
Right of abode
For holders of HKID card, the right of abode in Hong Kong is indicated by the letter “A” shown under the
date of birth.
Years of full-time employment
Years of full-time employment refer to the period of full-time work experience between candidates
obtained their first degree (or equivalent professional qualifications) to Aug 1, 2010.
2. Test Information
GMAT
The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is always REQUIRED for application. You are advised
to have your GMAT score ready when you submit the application.
Otherwise, please schedule your GMAT as early as possible and put your scheduled test date on the
application. In any case, you should submit your GMAT score not later than one month after application
submission. Applicants should direct the test operator to send the official GMAT report to the HKUST
MBA Program Office.
HKUST's code number is 7357. The Program Code for Full-time MBA is PRW-WT-99 and for Part-time
MBA is PRW-WT-53.
The score is valid for five years prior to the program commencement date.

TOEFL / IELTS
Applicants are required to take The Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International
English Language Testing Systems (IELTS) UNLESS
- Your first language is English; or
- Your qualification is awarded by a university or an institute where the language of instruction is
English
TOEFL test takers should direct ETS to send the official score report to HKUST MBA Program Office.
HKUST's code number for TOEFL is 0170-01.
The TOEFL / IELTS score is valid for two years prior to the program commencement date.

3. Reference Form
Applicants should nominate three referees from work or business counterparts, who can inform the
University of your capability, character and capacity for the MBA program, to complete the reference
forms.
Online reference
Upon contact information provided by the applicants, referees will receive an email with information to
complete the online reference form.
Completed reference forms should reach the MBA Program Office by the application deadline. Applicants
are advised to notify your referees in advance and provide enough lead time for reference completion.
