Traveling to the Ancient City of Xi'an
I'm so excited because right now I'm traveling to the ancient
city of Xi'an with my family for our summer vacation! Xi'an is the
capital of Shaanxi Province in central China. It has such a rich
history dating back over 3,000 years to the Zhou Dynasty.
We're going by high-speed train from our home city of
Beijing. The journey is taking about 4 and a half hours. I'm loving
watching the beautiful countryside fly by through the window.
There are so many farms, villages, and forests out there. It's very
peaceful and relaxing compared to the busy streets of Beijing.
As we're getting closer to Xi'an, I can see the landscape is
becoming more mountainous and dry. Shaanxi is located on the
edge of the Loess Plateau so there are lots of yellowish plateau
lands and hills all around. I've read that Xi'an used to be the
imperial capital for 13 dynasties including the Zhou, Qin, Han, Sui
and Tang. So many important events in Chinese history
happened right here!
Finally, we've arrived at Xi'an North Railway Station. It's
absolutely massive, with a traditional architectural style blending
grey brick, glazed tiles, and upward curving roofs. We're getting
our luggage and heading outside to meet our guide for the week,
Mr. Wang. He seems very friendly and knowledgeable about
Xi'an's long history and all the top sites to visit.
Our first stop is checking into our hotel near the Bell Tower
right in the heart of downtown Xi'an. We're staying at a lovely
courtyard-style hotel that recreates the architecture of the Ming
and Qing dynasties. Our room has wooden latticed windows,
decorated brick carvings, and even a little private garden area. So
pretty and traditional!
After getting settled, we're heading straight to the Drum
Tower Square area to experience the Muslim Quarter. This
neighborhood has been home to the Hui ethnic minority
community since the Tang Dynasty over 1,000 years ago. I'm
immediately struck by the sights, sounds and smells. The narrow
streets are lined with shops, stalls, and vendors selling absolutely
everything you can imagine.
There are mouthwatering aromas coming from the many
halal food stalls and restaurants - things like beef and lamb
skewers, flaky pastries, and bread just pulled from clay ovens.
