endeavor这个词，有些小伙伴也许不陌生，因为高中英语有学过，我记得课文提到

这个词的时候是说大航海时代伟大的库克船长的船叫endeavour（奋进号）。

高中词汇表里给的解释是「努力」。

由于在课文中它是一个孤立存在的词，一直以来都只记得意思不知道用法。

但在工作中，频频遇到这个词，特别是在有同事离职的时，邮件里往往会出现

endeavor。

As you may have heard, Tom made the decision to leave the company to

pursue other endeavors.

If you are not all aware, Mike has left LA to pursue a new endeavor.

然后同事回复的离职祝福邮件里，一定会有以下高频语句：

比起career这个词，可谓是逼格满满。

显然在这些语境里，理解为「努力」是说不通的，更加像是是「事业」「计划」，但目

前没有哪本字典有这个释义，所以我们只能意会了。

高中课本里把endeavour翻译成「奋进号」是非常有水平的，表示砥砺前行，取得

进步，而直接翻译成「努力」，就如同「越努力越幸运」「明天的你一定会感谢现在拼命的

自己」这种鸡汤格言般俗不可耐。

我们姑且把other endeavor, new endeavor, future endeavor理解为在奋进旅途中

的某一站。

有一个常用的搭配叫scientific endeavor，一般翻译为「科学事业」「科学项目」。

虽然同样直译是「努力」，但是却比effort更加伟光正。

我们是社会主义国家，社会主义在曲折中前进，社会主义事业翻译成socialist

endeavor是非常准确的。

当有人问你有没有听说过安利，然后要给你介绍一个伟大的事业时，你脑海里应该要

马上想到endeavor这个词。

美帝的航天飞机中，除了大家熟知的哥伦比亚号、挑战者号、亚特兰蒂斯号外，有一

艘也叫「奋进号」，是为了纪念库克船长第一次远征的那艘著名的「奋进号」，甚至也直接

采用了英式拼法Endeavour。
