An Unforgettable Trip to the Mountains
It was the summer before my 8th grade year and my family
was going on a camping trip to the mountains. I had been
looking forward to this trip for months! We went camping almost
every summer, but this was going to be an extra special trip since
we were going deep into the Rocky Mountains for an entire
week.
My mom, dad, little sister Emma, and I left early one
Saturday morning after packing up all our camping gear and
supplies into the car. The drive through the winding mountain
roads seemed to take forever, but I loved looking out the
window at the tall trees and rocky cliffs. After what felt like an
entire day of driving, we finally arrived at the campground
tucked away in the heart of the mountains.
We quickly set up our tent and got our camp kitchen area all
prepared. For dinner that first night, we roasted hot dogs and
made s'mores over the campfire. Sitting around the warm,
crackling fire under a canopy of bright stars is one of my favorite
camping traditions. I went to bed that night exhausted but
excited for our camping adventures to come over the next week.
The next morning, we went on a family hike up one of the
smaller mountain trails. Even though it was a relatively easy hike,
I still found myself out of breath pretty quickly at the higher
elevation we were at. We stopped along the way to admire some
incredible views and for my dad to show us some interesting
plants and wildlife. At the top, we had a picnic lunch while
enjoying amazing views of the vast, rugged mountains that
seemed to stretch on forever.
That afternoon, Emma and I had fun exploring around our
campsite, playing games, and rekindling our obsession with the
trading card game we used to love as little kids. As night fell, we
settled in at the camp kitchen area to prepare our dinner of
hamburgers and roasted potatoes. Just as we were about to start
eating, rain clouds rolled in seemingly out of nowhere and it
started pouring rain! Within minutes, our camp was a total
muddy mess. We had to abandon our dinner and make a crazy
sprint back to our tent, getting completely drenched and
laughing hysterically in the process.
