My Homemade Spaceship
Hi, my name is Timmy and I'm 8 years old. I love science and
space exploration more than anything! Last summer, I decided to
build my very own spaceship using stuff I found around the
house. It was really exciting and I learned so much. Let me tell
you all about it!
First, I had to design the spaceship. I got some paper and
drew out my ideas for what it would look like. I wanted it to be
big enough for me to fit inside with a control panel covered in
buttons and levers. There would be windows all around so I
could look out into space. And of course, powerful rocket
boosters on the back to blast me off into orbit!
For the body of the ship, I used a big cardboard box that my
mom's new TV came in. It was ginormous! I cut out a door on the
side and used duct tape to seal up all the other openings so it
would be airtight. Windows were just holes I cut out and covered
with plastic wrap. The control panel was an old keyboard with
some cardboard tubes attached for the levers. For the boosters, I
taped a bunch of empty toilet paper rolls to the back.
Decorating it was just as fun as building! I used aluminum
foil to cover the whole outside to make it look shiny and metallic
like a real spaceship. Bottle caps became buttons and lights on
the control panel. I glued glow sticks along the sides so it would
light up at night. My favorite part might be the name I gave it
though - The Star Voyager!
Once it was all built, I loaded it up with supplies like food,
water, and oxygen tanks made from 2-liter soda bottles. A bunch
of my stuffed animals were the crew. We were ready for launch! I
set up a makeshift mission control using my mom's laptop and
walkie-talkies. Across our backyard was an area marked for the
launch pad.
The "10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2,
1...BLASTOFF!" I flipped the levers and shook the whole
spaceship to simulate the rocket boosters firing. We were
headed to the moon! For the next few hours, I pretended to pilot
the Star Voyager through the vacuum of space, describing
everything I could see out the windows to mission control.
Asteroids, planets, faraway galaxies! It felt so real.
