Sports With Chinese Characteristics
Hi everyone! Today I want to tell you about some really cool
sports from China. These aren't like basketball or soccer though.
They are special sports that have been played in China for a very
long time. Let me describe a few of my favorites!
Wushu (武术)
Wushu is a Chinese martial art that is sometimes called
kungfu. It involves punching, kicking, and fancy moves with
weapons like swords or staffs. When I see wushu performances,
the fighters always look like action movie stars! They can do all
sorts of flips and jumps while wielding their weapons with great
skill.
In wushu competitions, athletes perform routines of
movements and stances solo or with a partner. The judges give
scores based on things like power, speed, difficulty of moves,
and overall presentation. The routines often tell a story through
the martial arts techniques.
My favorite part of wushu is all the awesome weapons. The
straight sword is very common, but I also love watching people
use other traditional Chinese arms like the tiger hook sword,
three-section staff, or meteor hammer. The meteor hammer is so
cool - it's a weight on a long chain that you swing around you. It
looks incredibly hard to control but the masters make it seem
easy!
Chinese Yo-Yo (Chinese Top)
This isn't like the yo-yos kids play with in America. The
Chinese yo-yo is a bamboo spin toy that is thrown and caught on
a string attached to two sticks. Players have to control the
yo-yo's movements by manipulating the sticks while the yo-yo
spins and does tricks.
Some of the best players can toss the yo-yo way up in the air
and make it circle around their body or roll across the floor
without falling off the string. There are all kinds of fancy
techniques with different grips and stick movements. The yo-yo
itself often has pretty decorations carved into it too.
