Let's Pursue Perfection

On the meaning of pursuing perfection, there are equally convincing instances

of both its meritsand problems. Some encourage the pursuit of perfection for it

could be a strategy motivatinginnovation and success, as is lustrated by the

example of Paul 0' Neill, CEO OF the world's safestindustrial company Alcoa. While

some disregard perfectionism as hurting self-esteem andperformance of, e.g,

pupils or learners of all levels. They believe that unhelpful perfectionismgoes

against high standards and that students need to aim at an A grade but never the

highest Apossible.

Personally Isee more benefit of pursuing perfecton than the harm of it.

First of all, the pursuit of perfection is human nature. Ever since ancient times,

such anenthusiasm drove mankind to seek more amount and higher quality of

food, dressing, housingand entertainment. It drove the advancement of science

and technology at an accelerating speed,witnessing, for instance, changes of

communication means from the cart to steam engine, to carsand trains, to

airplanes and space rockets. And today human beings have the common wish

topay sufficient attention to the protection of the environment, striving

relentlessly for thequality of life instead of merely creating infinite wealth. Human

civilization owes a lot to thedesire to pursue perfection.

Secondly, the pursuit of perfection does work satisfactorily as a strategy to

surpass dffiulties onthe road to success. Xue Qikun, vice-president of Tsinghua

University and winner of first prize inthe State Natural Science Award, once said

"no one's journey to success is smooth sailing. Myexperience actually gave me the

mental fortitude to pursue perfection in the face of challengesand a willingness to

enjoy the rigorous process." Likewise, a perfectionist's mentality eventuallyhelps

one to overcome his shortcomings and achieve "missions impossjble"Admittedly,

perfectionism sometimes might go to extremes and undermine

people'mance But properly leveraged, the pursuit of perfection could work

wonders.
