Happiness is on the way
Ⅰ. Introduction
I have been curious about the translation of the movie’s title – “The Pursuit
of Happyness”. “Pursuit” means “seek” and “look for” in English, but it
seems that we Chinese translate it into “knock on a door”. However, after several
times’ watching this film, I’ve become clear about the inner meaning of this
translation. There is no “y” (why) in happiness, but an “I”. The real happiness is
not related to wealth and fame, but the process when you are struggling for it.
In 1981, San Francisco, Chris Gardner invests all his family’s savings in
portable bone-density scanners which he tries to sell to doctors. The investment
proves be a mistake that breaks the whole family, even before his son is born, and
as a result, his wife Linda can’t bear the huge financial pressure, she leaves her
husband and moves to New York. Their son Christopher stays with his father. Life
becomes more and more difficult for them. One day, Chris finds that he can handle
with the magic cube easily, which shows that he has talents in numbers. This talent
earns him the chance to become an intern stockbroker. But when everything
seems to develop towards a better direction, the unpaid taxes pull them back from
the heaven. Chris and his son become homeless and even are forced at one point
to stay in a bathroom at a subway station (which I believe is the most touching part
of this film). However, motivation for happiness drives him to achieve his dream.
Maximizing his client contacts and profits is the only way to earn the one position
that he and his 19 competitors are fighting for, Chris develops many ways to make
his work done efficiently. As a result, his work has paid off and he is offered the
position. With tears in his eyes, Chris rushes to his son and hugs him as soon as
possible. The epilogue indicates that Chris finds his happiness finally.
“The Pursuit of Happyness” is a kind of inspirational film, which turns out to
be a great success all over the world. The most important thing about this film is
that it is based on a real story, which encourages a lot of people who are struggling
for happiness. Also, the film won the 2006 Oscar for best actor nominations and
American academy. In a word, it plays a great role in American film history.
Ⅱ. Everyone has equal right to pursue happiness
2.1 Grace under pressure
There are many different periods during a person ‘life, some of them are
good, and some are bad. Take our hero Chris for example; the early part of his life
is not very good. But he firmly believes he could make money with the portable
bone-density scanners. He tries his best to introduce this equipment to all the
private doctors. He has to work every day and very hard so as to raise his family.
