Frost `Robert (1874-1963), American poet, who wrote mainly about the
landscape and people of New England. In being both traditional and skeptical,
Frost’s poetry helped provide a link between the American poetry of the 19th
century and that of the 20th century.
The poem follows a basic iambic pentameter. It has a particular form as a
sonnet. Only two stanzas are in this poem. There are only there rhyming sounds in
this fourteen-line poem, and the rhyme scheme flows as ABBAABBA ACAACC.
In Stanza 1, Robert Frost describes a simple scene from nature --- a spider on a
flower (known as a heal-all) is holding a moth that it has captured as its prey. But
Frost's description is filled with imagery, including all the three elements -- the
spider, the flower and the moth -- are white, which here seems not purity and
goodness, but deathly pallor.
The shining point of the poem is in Stanza 2. Are those white things designed
by someone? “If design govern in a thing so small”. So how about our humans?
Frost gives us three questions to make us think about whether lives are designed
or not. This is a horrible idea if our lives have been designed by God and we can do
nothing to change it. However this is just the poet's view and I always believe in
myself, and my destiny will be designed by myself.
