To Block or Not to Block Parents on Social Media? An
Elementary Kid's Perspective
Social media is a huge part of our lives these days, even for
us kids! Almost everyone I know is on apps like Instagram,
Snapchat, TikTok, and others. We use them to share pics, videos,
thoughts, and to keep up with friends. Social media can be really
fun and a great way to express ourselves.
But there's one question that comes up a lot when talking
about social media with my friends: Should we block our parents
from seeing our posts and stories? It's a tricky issue with some
good points on both sides.
On one hand, having our parents follow us can feel kind of
intrusive and embarrassing at times. We're at an age where we're
trying to form our own identities separate from our families. We
want some privacy and freedom to share certain thoughts and
experiences just with our friends, without our parents seeing
everything.
I have a few friends who have blocked their parents from
Instagram and Snapchat because they felt like their parents were
being too nosy or leaving cringeworthy comments on their posts.
They said it was putting a lot of pressure on them to curate a
perfect online image for their parents to see. That doesn't sound
fun at all!
It's also just plain awkward when your mom comments
something like "My little angel!
