Coronavirus spending pushes U.S. 2020 fiscal year deficit (赤字) to record $3.132 trillion

The U.S. budget deficit hit a record $3.132 trillion during fiscal 2020, more than triple the

2019 shortfall due to massive coronavirus rescue spending, the U.S. Treasury said on Friday.

The deficit more than doubled the previous record of $1.416 trillion in fiscal 2009, when the

United States _____31____ a financial crisis.

At the start of the 2020 fiscal year ended Sept. 30, the U.S. government had been

____32______ to rack up a $1 trillion deficit before coronavirus lockdowns began in March,

shutting down large ____33______ of the travel, retail and small business sectors of the economy.

Outlays for fiscal 2020 jumped $2.105 trillion from 2019 to a total of $6.55 trillion, with the

increase made up almost ____34____ from coronavirus aid programs: increased healthcare costs,

stimulus checks and unemployment ____35_____, along with the cost of small business and

corporate rescue programs ____36____ by Congress.

As a result of programs that kept paychecks flowing to laid off workers through September,

receipts for the full year fell only about 1% or $43 billion from fiscal 2019, totaling $3.42 trillion.

The final fiscal 2020 deficit numbers come as the Trump administration and Congress have

been unable to agree on a new round of coronavirus ____37_____, with many Senate Republicans

calling for fiscal _____38____ in another package.

A joint statement from the U.S. Treasury and the White House Office of Management and

Budget ____39_____ an "incredible comeback" of economic activities as businesses reopened

over the summer months.

"The administration remains fully _____40_____ to supporting American workers, families,

and businesses and to ensuring that our robust economic rebound continues," Treasury Secretary

Steven Mnuchin said.

In September, the year's final month, the U.S. budget deficit was $125 billion, compared with

an $83 billion surplus in September 2019, the Treasury said.

Germany Crashes Out of World Cup

Germany became the latest defending champion to crash out of the World Cup at the first

hurdle, part of a trend but definitely not part of the plan when Germany arrived here.

A smooth-running_31_machine when it won the Cup in 2014, Germany now appears in need

of a reform after losing,2-0,to South Korea here on Wednesday and saying goodbye to Russia

about three weeks earlier than many expected.

It has been the earliest exit for a German team at the World Cup since 1938,which seems

even more 32 when you consider Hitler was then the country's leader and only 15 teams

participated.

With stars like Kroos,Mesut Özil and Mats Hummels,Germany won every match in_33_for

this World Cup,the first German team to do so. But it could not even_34_it out of the group phase

in Russia.

There seems to be a World Cup curse at_35_.Since the 1998 edition, the defending champion

has been eliminated in the group phase on four occasions: France in 2002, Italy in 2010, Spain in

2014 and now Germany.

But this team's early exit was still a(n)_36_shock,and Joachim Löw,the German coach since

2006, used that same word-"schock," in his own language-to describe the experience on

Wednesday.

"The_37_of being eliminated is just huge,"said Löw,who added that the team deserved to go

out early.

"It turned_38_.I must take responsibility for this."

A four-time World Cup winner, Germany was a finalist in 2002, third in 2006 and 2010 and

the champion in 2014 after dealing the host nation of Brazil a 7-1 defeat in the semifinals, the

__39_of which still leaves many Brazilians in pain.

The Germans certainly have historical company, list of defending champions to

lose very early shows how 40_it is to maintain momentum and focus with national teams whose

players practice and play together much less frequently than they do with their clubs.

Rosateresa.

more about making opera 50 than it is about making a living,"McNichols said.

New Path to Plastics

A crucial component could come from existing carbon sources. Ethylene (乙烯)is the world's

most popular industrial chemical. Consumers and industry demand 150 million tons every year,

and most of it goes into countless plastic products, from electronics to textiles. To get ethylene,

energy companies crack hydrocarbons (碳氢化合物)from natural gas in a process that requires a

lot of heat and energy,

(31) to climate change - causing emissions.

Scientists recently made ethylene by combining carbon dioxide gas, water and organic

molecules (分子)on the surface of a copper catalyst (催化剂)inside an electrolyzer - a device that

uses electricity to drive a chemical reaction. The (32) , described last November online

in Nature, could point the way toward using carbon dioxide as feed-stock for chemicals and

potentially fuels, helping to reduce (33)on fossil fuels and to put a dent in industrial carbon

emission.

The discovery grows out of work published last year by University of Toronto engineer Ted

Sargent, describing a similar process that used more electricity and was less (34) overall.

So Sargent says he (35) out researchers at the California Institute of Technology who are

"black belts in molecular design and synthesis."

Caltech chemists Jonas Peters and Theodor Agapie and their colleagues experimented with

organic molecules to add to the copper catalyst. An arylpyridinum salt turned out to be the

Goldilocks molecule, Sargent says it formed a water-insoluble (不溶于水的)film (薄膜)on the

copper that (36) the carbon dioxide so its molecules reacted most efficiently with one another,

without slowing down the reaction. The result was more ethylene, with fewer by-products such as

methane (甲烷)and hydrogen.

Still, the process must become even more efficient before it can be commercially (37)

and use carbon scrubbed or captured from facilities such as coal-or gas -burning power plants.

Lower energy costs, already (38) with renewable energy sources such as wind, could also

help make it more (39) ___________ .

"This is a(n) (40) breakthrough," says Randy Cortright, a senior research advisesr at

the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo., who was not involved in the study.

This result, he says, is "something that a lot of people are going to pay attention to, and they're

going to be able to build on."

The Unique Joy of Learning New Words

With all that’s happening in the news, life can feel like an exercise in determining the

particular kind of bad we are experiencing. Are we anxious or depressed? Lonely, or stressed?

Tim Lomas, a senior lecturer in positive psychology at the University of East London, is

engaged in the opposite endeavor, 31 all the types of well-being that he can find.

Specifically, Lomas is seeking to 32 psychological insight by collecting untranslated

words that describe pleasurable feelings we don’t have a(n) 33 for in English. “It’s almost

like each one is a window onto a new landscape.” Lomas says. So far, with the help of many

contribute, he has amassed (积累) nearly 1000 in what he calls a “positive

lexicography”--including the Dutch pretoogies, which refers to the twinkling eyes of someone

engaged in benign mischief (恶作剧); The Arabic tarab, a word for musically induced ecstasy;

And the Creole tabanca, which describes the 34 feeling of being left by someone you

love.

People are 35 with untranslatable words in part because they are useful: How else

could we talk to each other about the guilty pleasure of schadenfreude? But Lomas also see them

as a means of showing us “new possibilities for ways of living,” describing them as invitations for

people to experience happy phenomena that may previously have had been “hidden from them” or

to revel in (沉浸于) feelings they couldn’t previously 36 . Consider the Japanese ohanami,

a word for gathering with others to appreciate lowers.

Linguists have long argued about how much the language we speak--partly 37 by

factors like geography and climate--limits the thought we are capable of having or the actions we

can take. The world in which different societies live are distinct worlds, not merely the same world

with different labels 38 , “wrote the theorist Edward Sapir.”

Perusing (研读) the words in Lomas’ collection, at the least, is a means of meditating on

ways that we can feel good. When asked for one of his Favorites, the psychologist lists the

German Fernweh, which describes a 39 to travel to distant lands, a kind of homesickness

for the unexplored. Also delightful is the Danish morgen frish, describing the satisfaction one gets

from a good night’s sleep, and the Latin otium, 40 the joy of being in control of one’s

own time.

When you are frightened or feel endangered, your breathing and your pulse quicken in order

to give you a better chance of either running away from the threat or defending yourself against it.

When the danger is eliminated, your body returns to its pre-stress state.

Psychological stress can also be triggered in response to an external factor, as with a fear of

heights or public speaking. However, since it (31) ________ inside our own minds and is strongly

tied to our past experiences, psychological stress can also be caused simply by our thoughts about

certain events. Just think about a(n)(32) ________event is enough to make some people anxious,

even when the event is days away.

Experience plays a large role in determining what you consider as stressful. Many reactions

to stress are subconscious or (33) ________ and therefore, difficult to prevent. However, while the

body’s intial reaction is hard to regulate, the choices you make can play a large role in helping

keep psychological stress from going out of control.

So, what are some major types of stress?

The first type of stress is survival stress. When in fear for your safety, your body prepares

to(34) ________ the problem either by facing it or fleeing from it. Your body reacts to this type of

stress by sharpening your (35) ________of sight and hearing and increasing your breathing and

heart rate.

Another type is environmental stress, which is caused by unpleasant things you (36) _____-

___ daily life. Workplace stress, which is often caused by overwork or (37) ________with

coworkers, is one common environmental stressor.

The third type of stress is internal stress. This type of stress is caused by thinking about

stressful situations that occurred in the past or will take place in the future Being stressed is an

appropriate reaction to a(n)(38) ________threat, but the same reactions that are helpful in the

short term can prove harmful over time. Long-term-stress, known as chronic stress, can cause both

mental and physical health problems. For example, many people find preparing for a job interview

or to give a speech to be a stressful activity become overwhelming and can (39)______with daily

life if they last for days or weeks. With chronic stress, severe health consequences can be caused,

including heart disease, depression, excessive weight gain, sleeplessness, and digestive problems.

Long-term stress tends to weaken your immune system, making you more likely to (40)

_______flu or other illnesses. Furthermore, it slows down your recovery from these illnesses
