Title: My Smart Tips for Reading on Screens
Hi there! My name is Jamie and I'm a 4th grader. A lot of my
reading happens on screens these days - my school assignments,
ebooks for my book reports, even comics and magazines. My
parents are always reminding me not to spend too much time
looking at screens. But I've learned there are smart ways to make
screen reading easier on my eyes and brain. Let me share my top
tips with you!
Tip #1: Make Sure to Blink!
When I'm really focused on something I'm reading, I tend to
stare at the screen without blinking much. My eyes can start to
feel dry and scratchy. Now I try to remind myself to blink
regularly by imagining my eyes are a camera lens that needs to
"re-focus." Blinking keeps my eyes moisturized and gives them a
mini-break.
Tip #2: Look Into the Distance
After I've been reading for a little while, I make myself look
away from the screen and let my eyes focus on something far
away, like out the window or across the room. This helps my eye
muscles relax after working so hard up close. Taking little "vision
breaks" like this every 15-20 minutes keeps my eyes from getting
overly strained.
Tip #3: Check Your Lighting

room - the text doesn't show up clearly. Making sure I have good
overhead and natural lighting, without glare on the screen itself,
makes a big difference. If I'm reading at night, I use a soft lamp
or book light instead of the bright overhead lights.
Tip #4: Watch Your Posture
My mom is always reminding me not to hunch over or lay on
my stomach with my device too close to my face. Holding
devices at least 16 inches away puts less strain on my eyes. And
sitting up straight or leaning back a little lets me hold the screen
at the right distance without tiring out my arms and shoulders.
Tip #5: Use Night Mode
A lot of apps and devices now have a "night mode" that
makes the background darker and reduces blue light. This makes
