《围城》英文读后感

"The Fortress Besieged" is a masterpiece written by Qian

Zhongshu. It tells a story about a young man named Fang Hongjian

who was sent from Beijing to work at a university in the city of

Chengdu in the late 1930s. During his time in Chengdu, Hongjian's

love life is filled with uncertainty and chaos. He falls in love with

the beautiful and independent professor's daughter, Fan Cuifeng,

but is also pursued by the wealthy and persistent Wen Jia.

Meanwhile, Hongjian's mentor, Professor Shan, is being besieged

by problems of his own.

From the beginning, the novel presents a vivid portrayal of the

tumultuous time in which it was set. The society depicted in the

novel is one in which class and gender divide people, where pride

and practicality rise above everything else. The story is beautifully

crafted as Qian Zhongshu weaves together multiple arcs; the story

of Hongjian, Fan Cuifeng, Wen Jia, and Professor Shan all

intertwine to create a complex web of relationships and obstacles.

One of the things that I admire about this book is the way Qian

Zhongshu was able to convey the chaos of the time without ever

getting lost in the midst of it. Whether it was the political

upheavals or the interpersonal conflicts that emerged as a result,

the author kept everything in check with a masterful hand, never

once letting the book descend into gratuitous melodrama.

Another aspect of the novel that draws high praise from me is its

portrayal of characters. Each character is unique, and their

multifaceted personalities make them come alive on the page. Even

minor characters, such as the cleaning lady or the shopkeepers, are

given their own distinct traits and idiosyncrasies that make them

memorable.

Perhaps the greatest achievement of "The Fortress Besieged" is its

ability to interrogate the very idea of love itself. Hongjian seems

perpetually unsure about his feelings for Cuifeng, and throughout

the book, he is pulled between the various forces that are trying to

influence him. He is torn between his admiration for Cuifeng's

intellect and independence and his attraction to Wen Jia's wealth

and power. By presenting Hongjian's situation in this way, Qian

Zhongshu is able to explore the complexities of love beyond the

usual stereotypes and cliches.

In conclusion, "The Fortress Besieged" is a masterpiece of modern

Chinese literature. Its vivid portrayal of society and its complex

characters make it a must-read for anyone interested in the human

condition. Qian Zhongshu's distinct style, which blends traditional

Chinese literary devices with modern Western narrative techniques,

is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally resonant. I

recommend this book wholeheartedly to anyone who loves

literature and wants to explore the complexities of the human

condition.
